〈정진사전〉에 나타난 결연담의 서사적 기능과 그 의미

국문 초록

본고에서는 〈정진사전〉의 구조양상과 결연담의 서사적 기능을 알아보았다. 먼저 작품의 구조양상을 전반부와 후반부로 나누어 검토한 다음, 전반부의 결연담의 서사적 기능을 몇 가지로 나누어 검토하였다. 그리고 마지막으로 결연담의 문학사적 의미를 서사기법을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 이상의 논의를 결론삼아 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 〈정진사전〉의 구조양상을 개관해 보았다. 이 작품은 크게 전반부와 후반부로 나뉜다. 전반부에서는 남녀주인공의 기이한 결연이 핵심을 이루고, 후반부는 여인들 간의 쟁총이 대부분을 차지한다. 전반부를 제대로 파악할 때 후반부의 내용이 효과적으로 부각되고, 이 작품의 문학사적 의미나 애정소설로서의 면모도 잘 드러날 수 있다. 둘째, 〈정진사전〉의 결연담의 서사적 기능을 살펴보았다. 쌍둥이 남매의 아버지를 제목으로 활용한 것을 통해 전반부 결연 서사가 중요하게 드러난다. 그리고 여장 남성이 상대 여성을 속이는 방식은 낭만적이고 특이한 희화적 만남을 보여준 것이다. 또한 집단적 결연의 모습은 여성평등을 지향한 일면 보수성을 강하게 노정하고 있다. 셋째, 〈정진사전〉의 전반부 결연담이 갖는 문학사적 의미를 검토해 보았다. 이 작품은 기존 서사기법을 받아들여 강화하고 서사문학의 통시적 변주를 확인할 수 있다. 전반부는 〈구운몽〉을, 후반부는 〈사씨남정기〉를 전형으로 삼았는데, 기존 작품의 성격이 당시 민중의 취향을 적극적으로 반영하여 통속적이고 서민적으로 변화했다. 서사를 재편하여 소설을 창작하다보니 앞뒤의 서사가 긴밀하게 연계되지 못한다. 앞에서는 기이한 만남을 유희적으로 한껏 고양한 다음, 후반부에서는 어떠한 상황에도 굴하지 않는 여성의 효열을 강조한다. 이는 독자층이 선호하는 작품 유형을 적절히 안배하면서 새로운 작품으로 형상화한 까닭이다. 때문에 후반에 치우친 논의에서 벗어나 결연담과 쟁총담 모두를 비중 있게 다루어야 하겠다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to explore aspects of structure and its narrative function in 〈Jeongjinsa-Jeon〉. First of all, aspects of structure in this work were divided into two: the early chapters and the later chapters with discussion. Moreover, in this study, narrative function of alliance stories in early chapters was classified into several for further discussion. Lastly, the significance of alliance stories in the history of literature was investigated focusing on techniques of narration. Findings of this study were summarized as follows: First, an overview of the aspects of the structure in 〈Jeongjinsa-Jeon〉 was made. This work was divided into two largely in terms of structure. In the early chapters, extraordinary alliance between heros and heroins was at the heart of the story, while struggles for a love among women provided most of the later chapter. Appropriate understanding of the early chapters could lead to emerge into the later chapters effectively, allowing true meaning of history of literature and detailed characteristics of romantic fiction. Second, a narrative function of alliance stories in 〈Jeongjinsa-Jeon〉 was explored. Narration of alliance stories in the early chapters turned out to be significant by making use of a twin sister and brother’s father as a material of story development. In addition, the way that man dressed up as a woman cheated women was a romantic, absurd, and funny coincidence. Also, a collective alliance was a strong disclosure of conservativeness seeking for women’s equality. Lastly, the meaning of the early chapters of 〈Jeongjinsa-Jeon〉 was investigated in view of history of literature. In this work, the existing technique of narration was accepted and enhanced and diachronic variation of narrative literature was confirmed. Modeled with 〈Guwoonmong〉 in the early chapters and 〈Sassinamjeonggi〉 in the later chapters, this work was changed into a vulgar and democratic piece reflecting people’s preference of the times very actively. However, some of the drawbacks of this work was the lack of smooth connection of before and after narration as it was revised from a narration and created into a novel. In specific, a weird coincidence was highly elevated in the early chapter, while dutiful wife under any circumstances was emphasized in the later chapters as readers’ preference was adequately considered and a new work was embodied. Therefore, it was necessary that both alliance stories and stories of struggles for a love should be covered in balance.
