국문 초록

박태원 문학을 거론할 때 〈박태원=모더니즘 작가, 모더니즘=근대적 대도시〉라는 공식이 일종의 상식으로 굳어져 있다. 이런 측면에서 박태원의 소설, 특히 그 중에서도 「소설가 구보씨의 일일」에 나타난 산책자(flâneur) 모티브는 매우 중요한 의미를 지닌다. 즉 모더니즘=도시 체험이 일종의 대전제라면, 모더니즘 소설의 한 전형으로서 산책자 모티브는 이를 뒷받침해주는 소전제의 구실을 한다. 우리는 서구 모더니즘 문학에서 모더니즘과 도시를 매개하는 중개자 역할을 하는 산책자 모티브가 과연 박태원의 소설, 그 가운데에서도 「소설가 구보씨의 일일」에도 동일한 의미를 갖고 비슷한 양상을 드러내는지, 그리고 산책자 모티브를 통해 이 작품을 당대 경성이라는 도시 공간에 대한 탐색으로 읽어내려는 기존의 독법이 어느 정도 타당한 것인가를 살펴보고자 한다. 〈모더니즘=도시=산책자〉라는 등식의 유효성을 검토함에 있어, 비교의 기준을 벤야민의 논의나 벤야민이 본 보들레르라는 기존의 틀에서 벗어나 새로운 비교의 등식을 성립할 필요가 있다고 판단된다. 이를 위해 산책자 모티브가 드러난 서구 소설 가운데 발자크의 Ferragus를 선택하여 이를 박태원의 소설가 구보씨의 일일」과 대비시켜 비교문학적 고찰을 수행하고자 한다. 결론으로 〈소설가의 자의식〉이라는 이 작품의 돌출된 특성을 중심으로 더이상 이 작품을 산책자의 모티브를 통한 도시성에 대한 탐색으로 간주하지 말아야 한다는 점과, 이를 박태원 작품의 특수성을 규명할 수 있는 새로운 해석의 지점을 향한 출발점을 삼을 필요가 있음을 제시하고자 한다.

영문 초록

Previous research has shown that modernism and urbanity constitute main themes in Park Tae-Won’s work. It is widely recognized that he is one of the most important figures in Korean Modernism and that his work is largely based on various aspects of modern urban life. It is said that his main works, more specifically, One day of a Novelist, Mr. Gubo (『소설가 구보씨의 일일』) and Streamside Scenery (『천변풍경』), describe urban landscape of ‘Kyungsung’ in 1930s. Moreover, One day of a Novelist, Mr. Gubo has occupied a distinctive position in the novels of Park Tae-Won to the extent that Gubo as a novelist explore the urban space of ‘Kyungsung’ in walking through the street of the city. In this regard, the motif of flâneur’ plays an important role to link modernism with urban aspects of life. The main purpose of this paper is to examine the validity of the equation 〈Modernism=Urban City=Motif of ‘Flâneur’〉 through the comparative study of two novels, One day of a Novelist, Mr. Gubo and Ferragus (1833), one of the novels written by Balzac to describe rapidly changing aspects of Paris as modern city. New model of comparative study could be determined beyond the existing framework of the comparaison between Walter Benjamin (Baudelaire examined by Benjamin) and Park Tae-Won. We will examine whether the motif of flâneur has the same meaning in these works and reveals a similar pattern. The main focus will be laid on whether it is relevant to read this novel as the exploration of modern urban space.
