국문 초록

그동안 우리의 모더니즘 문학 논의는 서구에서 확립된 미학적 기법들을 한국 근대 소설 텍스트에 대입하고 확인하는 작업에 초점을 맞추어 왔다. 그러나 제국주의 중심의 모더니즘 기법들은 식민지 도시 공간과 만나는 순간 심한 변형과 굴절을 겪게 된다. 본 논문은 1930년대 식민 도시 경성의 시공간에서 형성된 ‘경성 모더니즘’이라는 특수한 정치ㆍ역사적 틀 속에서 이 같은 특성을 찾고자 했다. 본 논문은 박태원의 1930년대 모더니즘 계열의 두 작품 「낙조」와 「최노인전 초록」을 동시대 시공간적 맥락에 밀착시켜 ‘역사적 서사’의 관점에서 분석하고자 한다. 이 두 작품은 다 같이 한 인물, 곧 최노인의 삶에 대한 사적 이야기가 식민 도시 경성의 도시 공간적 지표들에 의해 공적 차원으로 확대되는 공간적 형식의 특성을 보여준다. 최노인은 단순한 한 등장인물이라기보다는 역사적 시공간의 맥락을 구체화하기 위한 일종의 동기화 장치이며, 나아가 ‘민족적 알레고리’로 기능하고 있다. 그를 통해 1890년대에서 1930년대에 이르는 시간축 위에 경성 서부 지역의 공간축이 구축됨으로서 일제의 만주 침략이라는 역사적 문맥이 텍스트 내에 들어올 수 있게 된다. 서대문 형무소를 에두르며 배회하는 최노인의 동선을 통해 이 시기 역사적 사실 맥락이 환기되며, 그의 일상은 식민지 조선의 민족 전체의 삶의 차원으로 확대되게 된다. 텍스트 내 지표들은 표층과 심층의 서사를 동시에 중층적으로 지시하는 특성을 갖는다. 연대기적 순서에 따라 재구성한 시간지표들을 텍스트 내 공간지표들과 관련지울 때, 비로소 부재의 형태로 현존하는 심층 서사가 그 윤곽을 드러내게 된다. 모더니즘은 본질적으로 재현불가능한 대상을 재현하고자 하는 시도에서 발전했다. 박태원은 당시로서는 재현불가능했던 거대사건(‘안창호 사건’)을 텍스트 내의 ‘공백’을 통해 암시적으로 구현하고 있다. 이 사건을 담지하기 위해 박태원이 여러 가지 기법들을 시도했음을 또한 확인할 수 있다. 월북 이후 북한 최고의 역사소설가로 자리매김한 박태원이 이미 식민지 시기 모더니즘 작가 시절부터 시대적 역사 상황에 대한 분명한 인식을 가지고 있었음도 확인할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper regards Park, Taewon’s modernist novels, the ‘Sunset’ and ‘the Summary of Old Man Choi’s life’ as historical narrative in the sociopolitical context. In these novels, Choi’s private life expands to the public sphere of the entire colonial Chosun in 1930’s. These works are what Joseph Frank called ‘spatial forms.’ Choi is not a character, rather a kind of motivation device and also functions as ‘national allegory.’ The space-axis of the west Kyungsung can be combined with the time-axis between 1890’s and 1930’s through his life, and the historical context of the Manchurian Incident can be inserted into the surface of novel texts. Choi always goes around the Westgate prison and it arouses the historical context, especially confinement of Ahn, Chang-ho at that time. His life gradually matches with the national destiny of the colonial Chosun. Therefore, these works consist as a ‘double plot’ in which the fundamental inner plot line is reduplicated (and sometimes inverted) in the outter plot of an old man Choi. If we match reorganized temporal indicators to the spatial indicators by the chronological order, the hidden fundamental master narrative as an absent presence shows up gradually in the surface. The studies of Korean modernism literature has focused on searching and finding the existing aesthetic strategies of imperial modernism literature. However, Kyungsung modernism combines these aesthetic strategies to a radically different kind of space, a space no longer central, but marked as marginal and ec-centric after the fashion of the colonized areas of the imperial system. That colonized space, Kyungsung may then be expected to transform the modernist formal project radically, while still retaining a distant family likeness to its imperial variants. It needs new and specific aesthetic strategies. This study approaches the historical context of Kyungsung modernism and introspects the political unconscious and colonial resistance. To represent the unrepresentable is the most important strategy in modernism aesthetics. Park invented and developed many new specific techniques and tried to imply the political event as a ‘blank’ in text. These novels become a vast interpretive allegory in which a sequence of historical events or texts and artifacts can be rewritten in terms of some deeper, underlying, and more ‘fundamental’ narrative, of a hidden master narrative of empirical materials.
