통일신라 마애불의 조형성 연구

국문 초록

  마애불은 한국조각사에서 차지하는 비중이 높은 조각으로 삼국시대에서 조선시대에 걸쳐 전국적으로 만들어졌다. 마애불은 9세기경 전국적으로 확대되었는데 그 표현방식은 고부조, 중부조, 저부조, 선각(線刻) 그리고 불신(佛身)은 바위면에 부조로 새기고 불두(佛頭)는 별석으로 만들어 올리는 방법 등 더욱 다양해졌다. 통일신라 마애불은 삼국시대 마애불의 전통을 계승하면서 다양한 형식을 추구하면서 절제되고 함축적이고 전체적인 표현을 하고 있다. 또한 얼굴 중심의 정면성 표현이 강조되고 있으며, 도상의 구성 또한 비대칭적이며 자유롭다. 또한 선, 면, 양감, 공간 등 여러 조형요소를 아우르면서 절제된 양감과 면 그리고 선적인 구성을 하고 있다. 당시 중국 불상조각의 국제적인 조형을 통일신라의 조형으로 소화하면서 자연주의적이고 사실적인 표현을 하고 있다. 통일 초기의 안정적인 비례와 균형 잡힌 불신의 사실적인 표현 속에 풍만한 볼륨, 세련된 이목구비와 자비로운 얼굴, 자연스러운 법의를 표현하고 있다. 8세기 후반을 넘어서는 경직한 불신의 형식화된 신체 표현 속에 무표정하고 활기 없는 얼굴, 긴장을 잃은 의습의 선묘 등으로 변한다. 통일신라 마애불의 조형성은 이 시대 마애불만의 특유한 것이 아닌 한국적 보편적 조형성에 수렴하고 있다. 이것은 자연에 순응하는 자연주의 미학의 모습이다.

영문 초록

  The Rock-cut Buddha which is relatively dominant type has been carved from The era of Three countries to Joseon dynasty in all of the country. The Rock-cut Buddha spread out its style not only Keongju but all of the country in 9th century of The Unified Silla, which has variety in type such as high relief, middle relief, low relief, and linear relief and which has specialty using rock for body and isolated stone for head. The Rock-cut Buddha in The Unified Silla succeeded mostly the type of The era of Three countries trying to explore various type with temperance and suggestiveness considering whole picture. In the way of express, frontality of Buddha"s face is stressed, however, its composition is unrestricted including asymmetric expression. It used temperate volume, surface and linear expression with harmony, including various artistic elements, such as line, plane, mass, and space, etc. It shows naturalistic expression with its own style developed from Chinese style. It has the early style of The Unified Silla which has balanced proportion and stable body with realistic expression and advanced style which expresses well developed volume, perfect particles of face, merciful face, and the natural meaning of Buddha. After the late of 8th century, it shows strict typical form of body, face without expression and spirit, and typical linear expression without tension. The characteristics of cut-rock Buddha of The Unified Silla has not its own characteristic but universality come from tradition. It is a naturalistic aesthetics which requires anadjustment.
