하우젠(Housen)의 미적 발달 단계가 미술 비평 교육에 주는 시사점

  본 연구는 하우젠(Abigail Housen)의 종단적 연구를 소개하면서, 그의 미적 발달단계 측정 검사가 미술 비평 교육에 주는 시사점을 얻고자 한 것이다. 미술 교육은 학습자에게 미적 체험을 통해 작품으로 표현하고, 그 작품을 감상할 수 있도록 가르치고-배우는 활동이다. 유아와 아동의 미술 표현의 발달 단계에 대한 연구는 학습자가 어떻게 미술 표현 기능을 발달시키는지 그 과정을 이해하게 해주었다. 그러나 미술의 개념이 역사 속에서 변화되듯이, 미술 교육의 관심도 자연히 창의적 표현으로부터 시각예술의 이해와 감상으로 확대되었다. 미술 비평 교육은 미술 표현 기능뿐만이 아니라, 미학, 미술사와 더불어 미술비평기술에 대한 이해를 필요로 하고 있다. 학습자를 위한 다양한 유형의 비평 교육 연구는 학습자가 미래의 미술 소비자로서, 미술 교양인으로서 성장할 토대를 마련해 주고 있다. 하우젠에 따르면, 미적 발달 단계는 설명하는 단계, 구성하는 단계, 분류하는 단계, 해석하는 단계, 재창조하는 단계로 학습자의 발달단계를 측정할 수 있다고 한다. 이 연구는 유치원과 초등학교 학생에게 적용하기에 적합하며, 학교와 미술관을 연계한 교육프로그램을 계획할 때 유용할 것이다. 하우젠의 연구를 토대로 시각적 사고능력을 측정하는 다양한 종단적 연구가 필요하다.

영문 초록

  This study examined suggestions on art criticism offered by Housen"s scale of aesthetic development stages by introducing his longitudinal study. Art education refers to teaching and learning activities that enable children to express their ideas in art works and to appreciate art works through aesthetic experiences. Research on the developmental stages of infant"s and children"s artistic expression found the way a student develops the ability to express art. However, as the concept of art has gone through changes, art education which was confined to creative artistic expressions has naturally expanded to cover understanding and appreciation of visual art. Art criticism education covers not only art expression but also aesthetics, art history, and art criticism skills. Various types of research on criticism education course are building the basis for students to grow into art consumers and people with abundant knowledge of art. According to Housen, the stages of aesthetic development are composed of accountive stage, constructive stage, classifying stage, interpretive stage, and re-creative stage. The results of this study are expected to be appropriately applied to kindergarten children and elementary school students and be useful materials for the development of an education program that links schools and galleries. Based on Housen"s research, various longitudinal studies need to be conducted to produce strategies to measure visual thinking.
