국문 초록

  어떤 새로운 과학 패러다임을 통해서도 정신성과 과학이 상호 일치할 수 있는 영역 또는 부분을 발견하는 것이 불가능함을 주장하였다. 그 이유는 첫째, 지금까지의 과학이 독백적이고 실험적인 배경을 뛰어넘을 수 없는 한계를 가지고 있다는 점, 둘째, 가장 근본적인 것으로, 독백적인 방식인 육안(肉眼)과 대화적인 방식인 심안(心眼)으로 논리초월적인 방식인 신안(神眼)이 작동하는 정신세계를 이해하려고 한다는 점 때문이다. 그러기에 결론은 명료하다. 신안에 근거한 통찰적 사고가 무시되었을 때 미술은 과학에 의해서 강조되었던 육안이나 심안 같은 일원적 세계에 머무르게 된다. 그리고 만약 미술이 유일하게 제공할 수 있는 지식의 영역이 있다면 그것은 통찰이다. 게다가 통찰은 제대로만 활용된다면 모든 지식의 근거가 된다. 미술의 본질적이면서 위대하고 유일한 강점은 정신적 경험의 과학이 될 수 있다는 것이다. 따라서 요구되는 것은 정신성을 독백적 패러다임으로 한정시키는 것이 아니라 육안, 심안, 신안을 포괄할 수 있는 고대의 지혜를 미술교육에서 받아들이는 것이다. 그리고 그것을 미술적 활동을 통하여 활성화 시키는 것이다.

영문 초록

  It is not through any sort of ‘new paradigm’ in science that spirituality and modern science will finally find mutual accord. Because, first, most science does not go beyond its monological/empirical ground. Second, worst of all, it is based on a category error, the attempt by the monological eye of flesh and the dialogical eye of mind to see what can be seen only by translogical eye of spirit. As such, it can profoundly detract from the awakening of a genuine spiritual awareness.
  The conclusion seems obvious: When the eye of contemplation is abandoned, art is left only with the eye of flesh and mind where it is crucified by modern science. If art possesses something that is uniquely its own, it is contemplation. Moreover, it is the eye of contemplation, adequately employed, that follows all strands of valid knowing. Thus art"s great, enduring, and unique strength is that, at its core, it is a science of spiritual experience. What is required for an integration of science and spirit is not an attempt to reduce translogical spirit to a new monological paradigm. Rather, we need to take the core of the wisdom traditions, namely, the Great Chain of Being, which includes molological and dialogical and translogical and expose them to the differentiation of modernity. If the three modes of science, philosophy/art, contemplation were properly utilized, new science which is comprehensive, integrative, and balanced which can deal with all of biological, social, and spiritual dimension of human come to appear.
