한문소설 연구의 시대적 추이와 과제별 전망

국문 초록

고전소설에 대한 본격적 연구는 김태준의 『조선소설사』(1933년)가 간행된 뒤로부터 따진다면, 대략 70년의 역사를 갖는 셈이다. 그것은 우리 고전문학 연구의 역사이기도 하다. 고전소설 연구가 국문학 연구의 출발인 동시에 중심을 차지하고 있었음을 반증하는 사례라 하겠다. 본고에서는 그런 중요성에 유의하여, 우선 고전소설 연구의 주요한 흐름 속에서 한문소설 연구사를 시기별로 개관·검토하였다. 그 결과 첫째 한문소설의 주요 작가와 작품에 대한 傳記的·實證的 연구가 주류를 이루던 1960년대, 둘째 새로운 연구방법론을 통해 한문소설 연구가 심화되고 연구 대상이 확산되던 1970년대, 셋째 한문소설과 인접한 서사장르로 연구 대상이 확대되고 사회사적 연구방법론이 주된 흐름을 형성하던 1980년대, 넷째 지난 시기의 사회사적 연구방법론이 재조정되면서 한문소설의 사적 구도에 관심을 기울이던 1990년대로 연구사의 흐름을 집약할 수 있었다. 다음으로는 이런 연구사적 흐름 위에서 새롭게 부각되고 있는 과제들을소개하고, 해결의 전망을 모색해 보았다. 그 결과 첫째 한문소설사의 초기에 해당되는 15~6세기의 서사문학적 지평에 대한 폭넓은 탐구가 필요하다는 점, 둘째 한문소설의 주류를 형성하던 傳奇小說이 현실성을 강화하면서 점차 새로운 국면으로 전환되던 양상에 대한 검토가 필요하다는 점, 셋째 한문소설이 국문으로 번역·유통되거나 통속적인 국문소설과 영향을 주고받던 양상에 대한 관심이 필요하다는 점, 넷째 한문소설 작품의 미학적 탐구와 함께 동아시아 한문소설과의 비교문학적 고찰이 필요하다는 점을 연구 과제로 제기할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

About 70 years has passed since research on Korean classical novel began earnestly with the publication of History of Chosun's Novel by Kim Tae Joon in 1933. Research on Korean classical novel is coincident with that on Korean classical literature. This indicates suggests that the former is the starting point and center of studying Korean literature. Thus this study first reviewed the history of research on Korean novels in Chinese in accordance with the times within the mainstream of research on Korean classical novel. In 1960s, a number of biographical and empirical studies were carried out about the main authors and works of Korean novels in Chinese. Such studies were extended and deepened in 1970s by employing new theories and methods of research. In 198Os, narratives that might be seen literally related with Korean novels in Chinese were also studied, when social history-based methodology was spotlighted. And in 1990s, frames of individual works of the novel were given more attention as the methodology as foresaid were re-manipulated. Then the study suggested new issues to be dealt with in relation to research trends so far described. Above all, a wide range of explorations need to be made about the field of narrative in the 15th and 16th centuries, when Korean novel in Chinese burgeoned as a genre. Next it is needed to review how fictional biography as the mainstream of the genre became more realistic and developed in new ways. Then more attention should be paid to how works of the novel were translated into versions in Korean, distributed and influenced or influenced by popular novels written in Korean. Finally it is needed to aesthetically explore works of Korean literature in Chinese and then compare them with those of East Asian novel in Chinese.
