국문 초록

이 논문의 목적은 1920년대를 중심으로 근대 한국 불교계의 사회사업의 동향과 인식을 규명하는데 있다. 불교 사회사업에 대한 그간의 이해는 각 사찰의 활동을 발굴하여 일제시기에 불교가 사회사업을 수행했음을 밝히는 정도에 그쳤다. 이글은 이러한 이해에서 한 걸음 나아가 불교 사회사업 실시에 영향을 준 요인들과불교계의 사회사업에 대한 인식을 밝히고, 학승 김태흡의 논저를 중심으로 불교계의 사회사업의 수용 논리를 살펴보았다. 문명개화와 개혁을 위해 사회화와 대중화를 표방한 한국 불교는 1920년대에민족운동, 사회운동의 부상과 일본 제국과 일본불교, 기독교의 사회사업의 실시를배경으로 하여 사회사업을 주장하였다. 불교계는 종교가 속세간의 경제적인 곤란함, 빈곤문제에 개입해야 한다고 주장하였으며 이를 위한 사업을 추진하였다. 기독교와 일본불교가 교단 차원에서 사업을 추진하였지만 한국불교는 주로 개별 사찰의 사업으로 진행된 한계가 있다. 불교가 속세간의 일인 사회문제에 적극적으로 대응하기 위해서는 교리 차원에서 돌파해야 할 것들이 있었다. 학승 김태흡은 일본 도요대학(東洋大學)에서 사회사업을 주제로 하여 연구를 하였다. 그는 사회사업을 통하여 근대 사회와 종교의 관계를 탐구하였다. 그는 종교의 본질인 구원이 저 피안의 세계에 있는 것이 아니라 현실에서 이상향을 구현하는 것이라 하여 한국불교의 사회참여에 근거를 제공하였다. 또한 사회사업의 이론적 기반인 사회연대론을 불교의 교리 내에서 수용하였으며 이를 통하여 불교 사회화와 대중화의 하나의 길로서 사회사업에 의미를 부여하였다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to examine the trends and perceptions of social work in modern Korean Buddhist circles, focusing on the 1920s. The understanding of Buddhist social work was only to discover the activities of each temple and to reveal that Buddhism carried out social work during the Japanese colonial period. In addition to this understanding, this article sheds light on the factors that influenced the implementation of Buddhist social work and the perception of Buddhist social work. Korean Buddhism, which promoted socialization and popularization for civilization and reformation, insisted on social work in the 1920s, based on the rise of society and the implementation of social work of Japanese Empire, Japanese Buddhism, and Christianity. The Buddhist community insisted that religion should intervene in worldly economic difficulties and poverty. Although Christianity and Japanese Buddhism promoted the project at the denomination level, Korean Buddhism is limited to the work of individual temples. On the other hand, in order for Buddhism to proactively respond to social problems, it was necessary to break through the doctrinal level. Kim Tae-Ab(金泰洽) studied at Toyo University(東洋大學), Japan, with a focus on social work. He explored the relationship between modern society and religion through social work. He provided the basis for Korean Buddhism’s social participation, saying that salvation, which is the essence of religion, is not in the world of peon, but in realizing the ideal in reality. In addition, the theory of social solidarity, which is the theoretical basis of social work, was accepted within Buddhism’s doctrine.
