공학학술영어에 대한 코퍼스 분석

국문 초록

수년간 영어 읽기 능력은 주로 어휘 지식에 달려있다는 것이 지배적인 생각이었다. 또한 영어가 모국어가 아닌 공과대학생이 영어로 된 교재를 읽는데 요구되는 기본적인 어휘 능력이 부족하다는 통념이 일반적이었다. 최근 수년간 국가 정책적으로 추진된 대학영어매개수업을 기반으로 공과대학생들도 영어로 된 교재로 전공을 공부해야 한다는 의견이 조성되었다. 이에 본 연구에서는 공학영어코퍼스를 구축하여 추출된 단어의 빈도, 분포, 유형에 대해 논하고자 한다. 구체적으로 본 연구는 코퍼스 기반 분석을 활용하여 공학영어의 특징을 조사하고자 하였다. 구축된 목표코퍼스는 기본적으로 공대에서 다루는 교재를 기반으로 만들어졌고 총 단어 180만개, 단어 유형 만 6천여개로 구성되었다. 본 연구는 비교대상이 되는 참조코퍼스로서 랭카스터 대학에서 구축된 British National Corpus(BNC)의 문어 부분을 활용하였고, 코퍼스 분석도구를 이용하여 빈도 분석과 키워드 분석을 실시한 결과를 보여준다. 이러한 양적 분석의 결과, 특수목적영어 교육에 도움이 될 공학영어 코퍼스와 BNC에서 가장 빈번하게 나타나는 내용어 형태와 기능어 형태 리스트 및 주된 키워드 리스트가 제시되었다. 연구를 기반으로 앞으로 특수목적영어교육을 실시함에 있어서 전공관련 기술적인 영어와 함께 일반적인 학술 영어에 대한 인식을 제고시켜야 할 필요성이 제기되었다.

영문 초록

It has been generally accepted for many years that English reading comprehension mainly depends on vocabulary knowledge. It has been also apparent that ESL/EFL engineering students fall far short of the basic lexical knowledge necessary to read academic materials in English. It has been a staple of Korean education policy for recent years that engineering students should study their specialized subject matter by reading textbooks in English. The context of the present study is a college of engineering departments in Korea. This study reports on aspects of frequency, distribution and types of words taken from a corpus of student engineering lexis. This paper presents the findings of a computer-aided study that aimed to characterize a corpus of student engineering textbooks. The student engineering corpus are derived from books on engineering topics like engineering materials, fluid dynamics, and basic thermodynamics. The target corpus consists of nearly 1,800,000 tokens and over 16,000 types. This paper shows the result of the word frequency analysis and keyword analysis of the target corpus, in comparison with the written part of the British National Corpus (BNC). The analysis of the extracted words was concerned with the most frequent word forms in the two corpora, including the most frequent function word forms and content word forms, as well as main keywords. In addition, the keyword analysis provided some interesting information about the keyword verbs in the target corpus. The result revealed that they appear to be predominantly from the academic register.
