미술가의 사회적 역할과 교육에 대한 미술대학 학생들의 인식에 관한 질적연구

국문 초록

미술교육은 미술계의 그림자와 같다. 미술에 대한 대중의 인식과 선호가 공교육을 통하여 형성되며, 입시 제도는 미래의 ‘작가’를 선별하는 기능을 하고, 대학교육에서는 미술계를 구성할 ‘전문가’를 배출한다. 그만큼 미술교육은 미술계가 사회에서 유지되고 운영되는 근저에 있음에도 불구하고 학문적 관심을 받지 못한 채, 많은 부분 개인의 경험과 생각에 의존하여 각자의 상황에 맞추어 진행되어져 왔다. 이에 Smith(1996)가 미술교육을 ‘존재는 있으나 미술계와 교육계라는 부모로부터 외면당하는 고아’로 묘사한 것도 무리가 아닐 것이다. 특히 학문의 고유한 영역을 강조하여 전문화를 추구해온 모더니즘 사회 속에서, 미술과 교육의 교차점에 놓인 미술교육을 논하는 데에 많은 어려움이 있어왔다. 이에 본 연구는 미술에 있어 미학과 사회학의 관점을 접목하고 미술의 이론과 실제를 함께 다룸으로써 간학문적인 담론을 활성화하고자 한다.

영문 초록

Although it has always provided the means of continuity and change to the art world, art education has not been given the appropriate attention and research. As Smith(1995) describes art education as an ‘orphan’ whose parents -the art world and the educational field- would not acknowledge its existence, art has been taught without systematic research and pedagogical understanding. Thus this study attempts to initiate an interdisciplinary discourse by blurring the boundaries between aesthetics and sociology and bridging theory into practice. The theoretical background of this study deals with how our perception of art has shifted from its essential formal values to social relationships and communication. In addition, the extended view of social science has embraced culture as the construction of interactions and meanings, which could be the subject of sociological investigation. The historical point of view also helps us see art education not as given but socially constructed. This importance of the historical understanding of this issue is briefly mentioned. This study uses qualitative methods to explore the meanings of art and education explained by art students at the higher education level. The detailed descriptions of what art means to them and why art can or cannot be taught are provided in order to uncover the shared uncertainty to the place of art in this society. The purpose of this study is to add a dimension to the discourse on art and education as well as our effort to make meaningful improvements.
