중등 사회과 남교사들의성평등교육 실천: 의미와 딜레마

국문 초록

본 연구는 성평등교육과 내용 연계성 및 실천 빈도가 가장 높은 주요 교과인 사회과에서 성평등교육을 자발적이고 능동적으로 실천하는 두 남교사의 성평등교육 수업 및 교육활동 사례를 탐색하였다. 학교 성평등교육에 대한 중고등학생들의 거부와 여교사에 대한 백래쉬가 심각한 수준이라는 현상에 기인하여, 성평등을 직접적 내용 요소로 다루는 사회과 남교사가 실행한 교육활동을 살펴봄으로써, 이들의 성평등교육은 학교 현장과 교실에서 어떻게 실천되고 있으며 그 맥락은 어떠한지, 의의와 역할은 무엇인지를 심층적으로 이해·기술하고자 하였다. 본 연구는 질적 사례연구를 실시하여 결정적이고 독특한 사례에 대한 구체적 기술 및 정보 제공, 현상에 대한 분석을 의도하였다. 연구 결과, 중등 사회과 남교사들의 성평등교육은 교과 교육과정에 충실한 교실 안에서의 실천, 나아가 학교 및 지역사회로 확장되는 교실 밖에서의 실천으로 다각화되었다. 이들의 성평등교육은 일방적인 성공도 실패도 아닌, 다층적 의미의 가능성과 기회, 동시에 한계와 딜레마가 공존하는 복합적인 양상이었다. 그리고 이를 둘러싼 맥락적 배경으로 이들 교사가 학생들과 맺고 있는 신뢰 관계 및 배움에 대한 수용도가 존재하였다. 본 연구의 결과를 통해 평등과 정의를 위한 균형적이고도 수용도 높은 모든 교육 구성원들의 성평등교육 실천 가능성을 모색하기 위한 긍정적 사례를 제공하고, 학교 성평등교육에 대한 논의가 성별 갈등과 반목에 기인한 소모적 논쟁이 아니라 발전적·실천적 논의로 확장되는데 기여하고자 한다.

영문 초록

This study explores the gender equality education practices of two male secondary social studies teachers who voluntarily and actively implement gender equality education. Social studies is a subject area with high relevance to gender equality and is conducted with the greatest frequency in schools. In response to concerns over significant levels of student resistance to gender equality education and backlash against female teachers practicing it, this study examines the educational practices of male social studies teachers who incorporate gender equality as an important component of their teaching. By doing so, it aims to gain an in-depth understanding of how gender equality education is practiced in schools and what its contextual dynamics are. A qualitative case study method was employed to provide detailed descriptions and analyses of unique cases, offering insights into the phenomenon. The findings reveal that gender equality education by male secondary social studies teachers is diversified into practices both within the classroom, aligned with the curriculum, and beyond the classroom, extending into the school and local community. Their gender equality education practices are characterized by a coexistence of multifaceted possibilities and opportunities alongside limitations and dilemmas, rather than being outright successes or failures. The contextual factors influencing their practices include the trust relationships these teachers build with students and the students' receptivity to learning. The results of this study contributes to discussions on school-based gender equality education by moving beyond divisive debates and discord. Instead, it seeks to provide positive cases and expand the conversation toward balanced, receptive, and equitable practices in gender equality education that promote equality and justice for all.
