국문 초록

플라톤의 ｢법률｣에 나오는 시가 교육은 법을 통하여 신에 이르는 과정을 설명해 준다. ｢법률｣의 초반부에 제시된 시가 교육에 관한 설명은 일종의 총론으로서, 법에 의한 교육 전반의 원리를 보여준다. 시가 교육은 삶의 다양한 사태에서 따를 만한 모범을 생생하게 묘사함으로써 덕성을 함양하는 역할을 한다. 그와 마찬가지로 법은 모범적 행위를 제시함으로써 덕을 함양하고, 나아가 신적 경지에 도달하는 것을 목적으로 삼는다. 시가의 본질적 특성인 미메시스, 즉 모방과 그에 수반되는 정서적 감화는 법의 경우에도 중요하게 작용한다. ｢법률｣은 ｢국가론｣과 달리 구체적인 일상의 행위를 거점으로 삼지만, 그 최종적 목적은 ｢국가론｣과 다르지 않으며, 이론적 탐구 중심의 ｢국가론｣의 교육과 조화롭게 공존할 수 있다. ｢법률｣은 교육의 매체로서 비언어적 상징을, ｢국가론｣은 개념을 주된 관심으로 삼는다. 플라톤은 이 두 대화편을 통하여 여러 매체들이 중첩되는 교육의 복합성을 보여준다. 상이한 매체들이 맺는 관련을 정확하게 밝히는 것은 우리의 몫으로 남겨진 열린 과제이다.

영문 초록

Plato suggests his new perspective on the education of poetry in his last masterpiece, Laws. Here he admits the significant role of poetry in his ideal nation, in contrast with his earlier work, especially the Republic. In Laws, there are two main concepts: law and god. Laws belong to concrete realities in which we live everyday, while the god is the absolute and transcendent standard. The education of poetry connects those two, law and god, by cultivating virtues in people’s mind through its imitation of great predecessors. The imitation(or mimesis) evolves not only their behaviors or speeches, but also feelings, thoughts, characters. Legislators regulate and prohibit wrong types of poetry because poets themselves cannot know the essence of what they are imitating. This education of poetry regulated by legislators shows the way how people can cultivate their virtues by following laws. Law, as well as poetry, depends on non-linguistic symbols as its media for education. Plato finally succeeds in elaborating two aspects of education, the education by intellectual inquiries and the education by laws, and it is our urgent task to reveal the relationship between them.
