국문 초록

이 글은 월터 옹의 견해를 중심으로 내러티브와 도덕과 수업의 관련을 밝히려는 시도로서 내러티브가 도덕과 수업의 표준이요, 이상이라는 주장을 다루고 있다. 옹에 의하면, 순수 구술문화에서는 방대한 지식을 조직하고 보존하여 전달하기 위하여 이야기를 사용했으며, 이야기의 최상의 형태를 가리키는 내러티브는 삶과 교육의 이상을 담고 있는 이야기이자 그것의 전달에 가장 적합한 이야기를 가리키는 것이었다. 그러나 문자 문화에 속한 우리는 언어의 원형에 가까운 말에서 떨어져 나온 글에 의존하여 그 이상을 전달해야 하는 불리한 처지에 놓여 있다. 구술성과 문자성에 관한 옹의 견해는 ‘문자의 한계를 말로 보완한다’라는 아이디어와 자연스럽게 연결되며, 이는 현대 내러티브 접근에 의하여 얼마간 수용되어 도덕과교육에 직접적인 영향력을 발휘하였다. 그러나 ‘문자의 한계를 말로 보완한다’라는 아이디어는 ‘언어의 한계를 대화로 보완한다’라는 관점에서 이해되어야 하며, 내러티브가 모든 언어예술의 최상의 형태라는 옹의 주장은 이러한 해석에 의하여 온전한 설명이 될 수 있다. 이러한 관점에서 보면, 교사와 학생이 공동의 이야기를 써 내려가는 모습이야말로 도덕과 수업에 어울리는 이미지이다. 내러티브에 관한 옹의 견해는 도덕과 수업이 ‘대화의 정신’이라고 할 만한 것을 지향하고 추구할 때라야 언어의 한계를 넘어 한계의 언어로 나아갈 수 있다는 점을 보여준다.

영문 초록

This article explores the relationship between narrative and Moral Education, focusing on the views of Walter J. Ong. According to him, in a purely oral culture, stories were used to organize, preserve, and transmit vast amounts of knowledge, and the best form of those stories—the narrative—contained the ‘ideal of life and education’ and was most suitable for its transmission. But those of us who are accustomed to the use of the written language are at a disadvantage, having to rely on text rather than speech to convey meaning, even though speech is closer to the original form of language. Ong’s views on orality and literacy are naturally linked to the idea of ‘compensating for the limitations of the written word with the spoken word’, which has been adopted by the modern narrative approach and has had a direct impact on Moral Education. However, according to this study, the idea should be understood as ‘complementing the limitations of language itself with conversation’. Ong’s claim that narrative is the highest form of verbal art is fully understood when interpreted in this way. In light of this interpretation, the image of a teacher and a student creating a story together exemplifies Moral Education. Ong’s view on narrative shows that we can go beyond the limit of language and into the essence of language when we pursue what can be called the spirit of conversation.
