제주도 한라산 신성 경관의 진화 과정 - 연상적 문화경관의 관점을 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 제주도의 세계자연유산을 구성하는 ‘한라산 천연보호구역’을 대상으로 세계문화유산으로 확장 등재하는 것이 가능한가를 탐색하는 것이다. 이를 위해 한라산의 ‘백록담 일원’과 ‘영실기암과 오백나한’을 대상으로 등재 유형을 무형의 정신적 가치를 강조하는 연상적 문화경관으로 전제하고 한라산의 세계유산 등재를 위한 ‘탁월한 보편적 가치’를 ‘등재 기준 (vi)’에 맞추어 검토하였다. 특히 두 경관에 내재되어 있는 신성성과 영성성의 진화 과정이 시대와 이념, 그리고 문화집단에 따라 어떻게 진행되었는가를 분석하고, 경관에 투영된 문화유산적 가치를 심미적 가치와 정신적 가치를 중심으로 검토하였다. 연구 결과, 한라산 백록담과 영실기암의 사례는 연상의 단계와 구조가 단순하지 않고 시대와 이념, 그리고 종교적 문화집단에 따라 현재까지 상호 혼합되거나 혹은 평행한 방향으로 진화되어 왔음을 확인하였다. 결국 현재 국가유산 정책에 암묵적으로 내재되어 있는 자연유산과 문화유산 사이의 분리 및 괴리 현상을 극복하고 향후 하나의 유산을 복합문화유산이자 문화경관으로 바라보는 통합적 관점이 필요함을 제시하였다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to examine heritage values of Hallsan Mountain [漢拏山] from the perspective of cultural landscape, while concentrating on the spiritual dimension rather than aesthetic one. In the examination, the focus will be given on the process through which different layers of sacredness have been accumulated on two main sites: Baekrokdam Lake [白鹿潭] and Yeongsil Valley [靈室]. Then, how different cultural contexts - ideas, beliefs, ideologies and practices - have been associated with the formation of sacred landscapes on the mountain will be interpreted by the standards from the third type of World Heritage Cultural Landscape: Associative Cultural Landscape. The inclusion of Associate Cultural Landscape on the World Heritage List is justifiable by virtue of the powerful religious, artistic, or cultural associations of the natural element rather than material cultural evidence, which may be insignificant or even absent (Operational Guidelines for the Implementation of World Heritage Convention, 2002). It is recommended that the World Heritage criterion (vi) should be satisfied when nominating the cultural landscape of this type: “be directly or tangibly associated with events of living traditions, with beliefs, with artistic and literary works of outstanding universal significance.” In this paper, therefore, the interpretation will based on the artistic and literary and painting works along with oral tradition that were produced mainly in the 17th and 18th century during the late Joseon Dynasty.
