국문 초록

본고는 17세기 초 ‘유구 왕자 제주 살해설’이라는 소문의 형성 과정을 재구성하고 그 개연성을 구체적으로 따져봄으로써, 서로 관련이 없던 것으로 알려진 조선-유구 관계의 변화와 제주의 ‘출륙금지령’이 어떻게 연결되는지 확인하는 글이다. 사실 무근의 이야기인 ‘유구 왕자 제주 살해설’이 인구에 회자되는 순간에만 잠시 존재하지 않고 오랜 시간 지속된 것은, 소문과 그 배경 사이에 특별한 관계가 형성되었기 때문이다. 그 국제적 배경은 일본이 유구를 병합한 1609년 직후부터 명과 유구(및 일본) 사이에서 조선이 직면했던 외교적 곤경을 말하고, 국내적인 배경은 1629년부터 시행된 제주인에 대한 ‘출륙금지령’이다. 당시 조선은 일본에 병합된 유구와 곤란한 관계에 놓이고 일본과의 통교를 경계하는 명으로부터는 압박감을 받는 이중적 곤경 속에서, ‘유구 왕자 제주 살해설’의 유포를 조장하는 한편 제주인에 대한 ‘출륙금지령’을 연속적으로 시행했다. 그 결과 ‘유구 왕자 제주 살해설’은 실제 이와 무관한 제주인들의 삶을 정신적으로 속박했고, ‘출륙금지령’ 역시 실효성은 낮지만 소문과 연동하여 제주인에 대한 구속 효과를 발휘했다. 이를 통해 조선 정부는 18세기까지 유구와 불필요한 외교 관계를 ‘회피’하는데 성공했다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the connection between Joseon-Ryukyu relations and the ban on Jeju people from entering the land by reconstructing the formation process of the rumor of the ‘Ryukyu Prince’s murder on Jeju island’ in the early 17th century and examining the specifics of the rumor's plausibility. The fact that the ‘Ryukyu Prince’s murder on Jeju island’ rumor, which is a mixture of fact and fiction, persisted for a long time, rather than only for a short period of time when it was circulated among the population, is due to the special relationship between the rumor and its background. The international context refers to the diplomatic predicament that Joseon faced between the Ming and Ryukyu (and Japan) from shortly after 1609, when Japan annexed the Ryukyu, and the domestic context is the ban on Jeju people from entering the land since 1629. Faced with the dual predicament of being at odds with Ryukyu, which had been annexed by Japan, and under pressure from Ming, which was wary of engaging with Japan, Joseon encouraged the circulation of this rumor and enforced the ban on Jeju people from entering the land. As a result, this rumor story mentally bound the lives of Jeju who had nothing to do with it, and the ban, while less effective, had a restraining effect on Jeju Islanders. In this way, the Joseon government succeeded in “avoiding” unnecessary diplomatic relations with the Ryukyu until the 18th century.
