한모니까의 『DMZ의 역사』는 다국적 사료의 교차 검토를 통해 비무장지대(DMZ)와 한반도 정전체제를 재조명하고, 이를 한국전쟁사 및 글로벌 냉전사와 연결된 맥락에서 분석한다. 특히, 비무장지대의 기원과 축소 과정, ‘비무장지대의 무장화' 현상에 주목하며, 1960년대 베트남전쟁과 군사기술의 영향을 입체적으로 탐구하였다. 연구는 한반도 DMZ가 단순한 평화의 상징이 아닌, 냉전적 충돌과 정치적 긴장이 지속된 장소임을 강조한다. 또한 남북한의 평화적 DMZ 활용 시도와 그 한계를 조명함으로써 향후 한반도 정전체제의 평화적 해체를 위한 역사적 함의를 보여준다. 본 서평은 『DMZ의 역사』의 역사를 한국전쟁사와 글로벌냉전사의 맥락에서 비평하며, 비무장지대가 제국주의 질서의 유산, 신탁통치 구상, 그리고 유엔의 정전레짐 등 1945년부터 1950년까지 구식민지와 내전에 강대국들이 개입한 여러 형태가 혼재되어 만들어졌다는 점을 지적했다. 나아가 비무장지대와 정전협정을 ‘한반도 정전체제 존속의 핵심 요소’라고 본 저자의 주장에 대해 ‘비무장지대의 무장화’에도 불구하고 정전체제가 오히려 공고해졌다는 사실은 정전체제의 핵심 축이 비무장지대, 정전협정이 아니라 유엔의 정전레짐과 한미일 동맹체제에 있다는 논점을 제기했다.

영문 초록

Han Monika's History of the DMZ reexamines the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and the armistice regime on the Korean Peninsula through a cross-analysis of multinational sources. The work situates these topics within the broader contexts of the Korean War and the global Cold War. It particularly focuses on the origins and reduction of the DMZ, the phenomenon of its “militarization,” and the multifaceted influences of the Vietnam War and military technologies in the 1960s. The study highlights that the Korean DMZ is not merely a symbol of peace but a site of ongoing Cold War conflicts and political tensions. By shedding light on both the efforts and limitations of South and North Korea to utilize the DMZ for peaceful purposes, the book provides historical insights into the potential dismantling of the armistice regime in favor of peace on the Korean Peninsula. This review critiques History of the DMZ within the contexts of the Korean War and global Cold War history, emphasizing the DMZ’s origins as a composite outcome of imperialist legacies, trusteeship proposals, and the UN’s armistice regime from 1945 to 1950. Additionally, it challenges the author's assertion that the DMZ and the armistice agreement are the core pillars of the Korean armistice regime, arguing instead that despite the DMZ’s militarization, the regime's stability has been more significantly upheld by the UN's armistice mechanisms and the U.S.-ROK-Japan alliance system.
