내셔널리즘을 횡단하는 ‘비(非)국민’의 시선 - 김사량의 「향수」에 나타나는 아편 중독 모티프를 중심으로

국문 초록

이 연구는 근대성 자체에 대한 비판으로서 내셔널리즘이 부과하는 보편문법을 ‘트랜스(trans-)’하는 것을 ‘트랜스내셔널’ 개념이라 전제하고, 김사량의 「향수」에 나타나는 아편 중독 모티프를 중심으로 트랜스내셔널의 가능성을 고찰한다. 시대적 상황과 일제의 통치 담론 속에서 「향수」에 등장하는 아편중독자 가야는 이주자이자 범죄자로서 이중의 ‘비(非)국민’으로 위치하는데, 본 연구는 가야의 ‘비(非)국민’으로서의 위치뿐만 아니라 이 ‘비(非)국민’의 위치에서 벗어나고자 하지 않는다는 점에 주목했다. 정체성의 혼란을 ‘극복’하고 이질적인 문화를 받아들이는 트랜스내셔널적 과정은 역설적으로 내셔널리즘을 강화하게 만드는 결과로 이어지기도 한다. 그렇기에 국가 정체성에 대한 혼란과 극복 과정이 거세된 이들의 시선에서 오히려 내셔널리즘이 부과하는 보편문법을 역전시키는 진정한 의미의 트랜스내셔널의 가능성을 읽을 수 있다. 이에 따라 ‘비(非)국민’의 위치에서 벗어나지 않고자 하는 가야의 행위를 내셔널리즘이 부과하는 국가 정체성에 균열을 내는 행위로 해석할 수 있다. 게다가 또 다른 인물인 현의 트랜스내셔널리즘도 ‘아편 중독’이라는 모티프를 통해 발견되는데, 이와 같은 양상은 트랜스내셔널과 탈식민성 사이의 상관관계를 암시한다. 하지만 현은 국가 정체성에 대한 인식론적 전환 과정 속에서도 북경의 조선인들에게 부과한 민족정체성은 해체하지 못한다. 이는 내셔널리즘을 횡단하는 가야와 대비되며, ‘국가’ 또는 ‘민족’ 중에 택일해야만 했던 일제강점기의 내셔널리즘 그 자체를 보여준다.

영문 초록

This study posits the concept of ‘trans-national’ as a critique of modernity itself by transcending the universal grammar imposed by nationalism, and explores the potential of the ‘trans-national’ by focusing on the motif of opium addiction in Kim Sa-ryang's Nostalgia. Within the context of the era and Japanese colonial discourse, the character Kaya, an opium addict in Nostalgia, occupies a dual position as a ‘non-national’, both as an immigrant and a criminal. This study not only highlights Kaya’s position as a ‘non-national’ but also notes that Kaya does not seek to escape this status. The ‘trans-national’ process of ‘overcoming’ identity confusion and embracing an alien culture paradoxically leads to the reinforcement of nationalism. Thus, from the perspective of those marginalized and stripped of their national identity, the true potential of ‘trans-national’ can be seen in its ability to subvert the universal grammar imposed by nationalism. Therefore, Kaya’s refusal to abandon his position as a ‘non-national’ can be interpreted as an act that disrupts the national identity imposed by nationalism. Furthermore, another character, Hyeon, also exhibits a ‘trans-national’ perspective through the motif of opium addiction, which suggests a correlation between ‘trans-nationalism’ and postcoloniality. However, even within the process of epistemological shifts, Hyeon is unable to escape the ethnic identity imposed on Koreans in Beijing. This contrasts with Kaya's traversal of nationalism and highlights the very nationalism of the Japanese colonial period that required a choice between ‘nation’ and ‘ethnicity’.
