국문 초록

이 논문은 1930년대 후반 김남천의 장편소설론을 ‘로만’이라는 개념을 둘러싼 당시의 담론 상황을 실증적으로 추적하는 방식을 통해 살펴보고자 했다. 그 과정을 통해 기존 논의가 지나쳤던 역사적 맥락을 구성하는 한편, ‘로만’ 개념의 성립과 전개, 그리고 해소의 과정을 따라 변화하는 김남천 비평의 문제의식을 텍스트에 밀착하여 확인하는 것이 이 논문의 의도하는 바라고 할 수 있다. 김남천 비평에서 ‘로만’ 개념의 등장은 루카치를 비롯한 소비에트 러시아의 장편소설론과 접촉하는 과정에서 일어난 일종의 인식론적 단절을 상징적으로 보여주는 것이었다. 이후 김남천은 ‘로만’ 개념을 매개로 장편소설과 관련된 창작방법에 대한 논의를 전개해 나가면서 그의 비평적 관점을 구체화한다. 하지만 시대적 상황의 변화에 따라 그 개념에 내포된 전망의 희미해지는 상황을 맞아 김남천 비평에서 ‘로만’은 점차적으로 해소되기에 이른다. 텍스트의 상황에서 김남천의 문제의식은 일관된 선조적인 방식을 따라 이동한다기보다 내적인 비약과 외적 영향으로 인한 굴절을 내포하는 비연속적인 면모를 나타내고 있었다. 그와 같은 결과는 ‘로만’이라는 개념의 역사를 실증적으로 검토하는 작업을 통해서 얻을 수 있는 고유의 영역일 것이다. 한편 ‘로만’의 개념을 통해 살펴본 김남천의 문제의식의 변화 과정은 그가 참조한 레퍼런스의 성격과 범위의 확장과 연계되어 있었고, 레퍼런스의 내용과 더불어 그것을 자신의 글 내부에 수용하고 표현하는 방식의 진화와도 연관되어 있다는 사실 또한 이 연구가 밝히고자 하는 바이다. 그와 관련된 상황은 김남천이 ‘로만’의 전망을 대체할 이념을 새로운 방향에서 탐색하던 시기를 배경으로 더 본격적으로 진행되는데, 그 문제에 대한 고찰은 차후의 과제로 남긴다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to examine Kim Nam-cheon’s theory of novels in the late 1930s by empirically tracing the discourse situation surrounding the concept of ‘Roman’ at the time. Through this process, I want to survey the historical context that has been overlooked in previous discussions, and closely examine the changing issues of Kim Nam-cheon’s criticism along the process of establishment, development, and resolution of the concept of ‘Roman’. The emergence of the concept of ‘Roman’ in Kim Nam-cheon’s criticism symbolically showed a kind of epistemological break that occurred in the process of coming into contact with the novel theory of Soviet Russia including Lukács. Afterwards, Kim Nam-cheon developed a discussion on the creative method related to novels using the concept of ‘Roman’ as a medium and concretized his critical perspective. However, as the situation of the times changed and the prospects implied in the concept became blurred, ‘Roman’ gradually came to be dissolved in Kim Nam-cheon’s criticism. In the context of the text, Kim Nam-cheon’s consciousness showed a discontinuous aspect that included internal leaps and refractions due to external influences rather than moving along a consistent ancestral pattern. I think the such results may be a unique area that can be obtained through empirically examining the history of the concept of ‘Roman’. On the other hand, this study also aims to reveal that the process of change in Kim Nam-cheon’s consciousness examined through the concept of ‘Roman’ was linked to the expansion of the nature and scope of the references he referred to, and was also related to the evolution of the way he accepted and expressed them in his writing along with the content of the references. The situation related to this is further developed against the backdrop of the period when Kim Nam-cheon was exploring a new ideology to replace the perspective of ‘Roman’, but consideration of this issue is left as a future task.
