김동인 소설 ｢동업자｣의 검열과 개작 연구

국문 초록

본 연구에서는 김동인의 소설 ｢동업자｣를 대상으로 이루어진 검열이 개작에 어떤 영향을 끼쳤는지 살펴보았다. 김동인의 ｢동업자｣는 1929년에 동아일보에서 연재된 단편소설이다. 이 소설은 1938년 『현대조선문학단편집』상권에 수록될 예정이었으나 검열로 인해 불허가 처분을 받았다. 이는 이 작품이 1937년 중일전쟁을 전후로 강화된 검열 체제의 변화와 1936년의 강화된 검열 표준 중 하나인 ‘조선 민족의 처지를 곡설하고 모욕하는 내용’에 해당하는 것이라는 판단 때문이었다. 이후 ｢동업자｣는 1946년 김동인의 창작집 『태형』에 ｢눈보래｣라는 제목으로 개작되었다. 본 연구에서는 조선출판경찰월보에 수록된 내용을 바탕으로 1929년 연재본과 1938년 검열본 그리고 1946년 개작본을 각각 비교해보았다. 그 결과 연재본과 검열본은 동일한 판본임을 확인하였다. 그러나 1946년 개작본은 일부 내용이 삭제되거나 추가됨으로써 소설이 가지고 있었던 일제에 대한 비판과 민족의식이 약화되고 오히려 개인의 비극성이 강조된 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 본 연구에서는 이와 같은 개작의 원인이 일제 말기 친일 행적이 뚜렷한 작가 김동인이 작품 속 주인공인 홍 선생에 빗대어 자기변명을 하는 방식이었음을 밝히고자 하였다.

영문 초록

This study examines how the censorship of Kim Dong-in’s novel, “Dongeopja”, influenced its revision. It is a short story that was serialized in the Dong-A Ilbo in 1929. It was scheduled to be published in HyeondaeJoseonmunhakdanpyeonjip in 1938, but censorship prevented it from appearing. This was due to the changes in the censorship regime after the Sino-Japanese War in 1937 and the tightening of censorship standards in 1936. The work was later revised in 1946 under the title “Nunborae” in Kim Dong-in’s collection of short stories Taehyung. This study compares contents of the novel at the time of the newspaper in 1929, The content of the novel as described in the censorship reason in 1938, and the 1946 revised version based on the information contained in the Chosun Chulpan Kyeongchal wolbo. The results confirmed that the newspaper serialized and censored novels were the same story. However, we found that the 1946 revised version of the novel had some deletions and additions that weakened the novel’s criticism of the anti-Japan and national consciousness and emphasized the tragedy of the individual. This study aims to reveal that the reason for this revision was the way Kim Dong-in, a writer with a clear pro-Japanese record during the late Japanese colonial period, made self-excuses by comparing himself to the protagonist of the novel, Mr. Hong.
