국문 초록

근대 한국인이 국경을 넘는 월경의 형식은 체제 변동과 사회 구조의 변화 과정 속에서 다채롭게 나타났다. 그 중 망명은 제국-식민지 체제의 통치성의 영역 밖으로 자발적으로 이탈하여 박해받는 상태로부터 벗어나 자유를 추구하는 개인의 의지와 실천을 상징적으로 보여준다. 이런 점에서 근대 한국문학에서 망명자들의 행위와 욕망을 살펴보는 것은 제국-식민지 체제하 월경하는 주체들의 경계에 대한 인식과 감각을 확인할 수 있게 한다. 이효석의 초기 문학에서 북국(해삼위, 나아가 러시아)은 대체로 지식인 청년의 낭만적 동경의 시선 이래 ‘지금-여기’의 식민지 조선의 대안 공간으로 상상되었다. 그리고 그곳을 향해 국경을 월경하는 밀항자들은 식민지 조선인으로서의 자기를 탈각하고 새로운 정체성을 획득하고자 했던 지식인 청년 남성이었다. 그들이 망명의 과정에서 기존의 자기와 결별하고, 망명 이후 자신의 제한적･폐쇄적 위상을 극복한 것처럼 환상을 맛보았던 것은 주의자로서 어떤 사상과 신념에 기초한 실천의 과정을 수행했기 때문이 아니라, 월경 이전부터 지니고 있었던 낭만적 동경의 시선을 고스란히 북국에 투사했기 때문에 가능한 것이었다. 비록 이효석 초기 문학에 나타난 북국에 관한 인식과 망명자의 표상이 낭만적 동경에 의해 피상적으로 주조된 것이라고 하더도, 그러한 문학적 상상력은 근대 이후 월경하는 주체를 탐색하는 데 흥미로운 관점을 제시한다.

영문 초록

The forms of border crossing by modern Koreans appeared in various ways in the process of change of regime and social structure. Among them, exile symbolically shows the will and practice of individuals who voluntarily escaped the realm of the ruling power of the imperial-colonial regime and sought freedom from the state of persecution. In this respect, examining the actions and desires of exiles in modern Korean literature allows us to confirm the perception and sense of boundaries of subjects crossing the border under the imperial-colonial regime. In Lee, Hyo-seok’s early literature, the North Country was generally imagined as an alternative space to the colonial Joseon of the here and now, since it was the romantic longing gaze of intellectual youth. And the stowaways who crossed the border there were intellectual youth males who wanted to shed their colonial Joseon selves and acquire a new identity. They experienced the illusion that they had broken away from their existing selves in the process of exile and had overcome their limited and closed status after exile. This was possible not because they carried out a process of practice based on certain ideologies and beliefs, but because they projected the romantic longing gaze they had had before crossing the border onto the North Country. Even if the perception of the North Country and the representation of the exiles in Lee, Hyo-seok’s early literature were superficially formed by romantic longing, they provide an interesting perspective for exploring the subject of border crossing since the modern era.
