국문 초록

본 연구는 일제강점기 때 충청도에서 활동한 애국지사의 문집에 나타나 있는 시대 상황과 애국지사들이 시대와 자아의 갈등을 문학적으로 어떻게 표출했는지 그 실상을 구체적으로 파악하고자 하는 의도에서 시도되었다. 본 연구의 목적은 일제강점기라는 시대 배경에서 애국지사라는 특별한 집단이 이루어 놓은 한문학의 성취와 그것의 문학사적 위상이 일반 문인들과의 어떤 차이점이 있는지를 확인하는 것이다. 이러한 차원에서 이 시기의 유학자이자 일제에 항거했던 독립운동가이며 한편으로 한시 작가로서의 면모를 공유하고 있었던 성암 이철영의 한시 연구를 그 시발점으로 삼았다. 이철영은 망국인으로서 일본의 침범에 대해 가슴 아파하고 또 이러한 현상들에 순응하며 절조를 잃어가는 백성들의 행위를 아파하는 시를 지었다. 그리고 일본 침략의 부당성을 편지로 비판한 일과 민적법에 불응한 일로 세 차례 총 75일 동안 구금되어서도 일제에 저항하는 시를 지으며 절조를 보여주었다. 또한 유인석, 김복한, 이설, 최익현, 안중근 등 우리나라 의병들의 행적을 시로 형상화하였다. 그는 애국지사의 행적을 통해 자신의 의지를 더 확고히 하고자 하였고, 의병들의 빛나는 성과를 시로 형상화함으로써 불굴의 정신을 표현하였다. 그는 주역의 복괘를 자주 인용하여 국권 회복에 대한 희망을 시로 읊었다. 그의 국권 회복에 대한 희망은 유학자의 학문적 인식을 바탕으로 한 희망으로 ‘극에 달하면 아래로 돌아와 다시 생한다.’라고 하는 역리(易理)에 근거하였다고 할 수 있다. 이철영의 문집 ≪성암집≫은 한 개인의 문집 자료로서의 가치뿐만 아니라 일제강점기 애국지사의 배일 의식과 그에 따른 저항운동 및 일제의 만행을 파악할 수 있는 매우 의미 있는 자료이다. 그리고 이철영의 절의 정신이 어떻게 그의 시 세계에 적용되었는지를 구체적으로 이해할 수 있는 상세한 기록 자료로서의 가치와 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

This study aims to concretely identify the state of the era depicted in the writings of a patrioitc activist of the Chungcheong province and its expression of the reality containing the conflict between the era and the self. This is an attempt at differentiating the classical Korean literature achievements and its literary status of patriotic activists placed on the background of the Japanese colonial period from that of ordinary literati. In this aspect, the study laid its starting point on the research on the poetry of Seongam Lee Cheolyoung, who was simultaneously a Confucian scholar, an independence activist against the Japanese, and a classical Korean poet. As a victim of Japanese aggression during the colonial period, Lee Cheolyeong expressed his sorrow from the Japanese invasion and wrote poems lamenting the actions of the people losing their dignity by complying to the phenomenon. Even during his three imprisonments due to criticizing the injustice of the invasion through letters and refusing the Japanese civil laws, which lasted for a total of 75 days, he wrote poems criticizing the injustice of the invasion and displayed his dignity. Furthermore, he visualized the deeds of Korean independence warriors such as Yoo Inseok, Kim Bokhan, Lee Seol, Choi Ikhyun, and Ahn Junggeun through his poetry, which aimed to strengthen his own will through their actions. This was also an expression of his indomitable spirit through the shining achievements of the righteous independence soldiers. He frequently quoted the “Bok-gwe” of the Book of Changes (I ching) and recited poems regarding the hopes for restoring the national sovereignty, which can be understood as expressing his hope founded on the scholarly understanding of a Confucian scholar about the reverse principle of 'returning from the extreme to revive'. Seongam Yi Cheolyeong's collection of writings, “Seongam Collection,” is not only valuable as a personal literary collection but also as a very significant source for understanding the consciousness of the patriotic activists during the Japanese colonial period along with its subsequent resistance movements and the atrocities of the Japanese. Moreover, it serves as a detailed record of how the sense of dignity of Lee Cheolyoung was applied to his poetic world, indicating its value and significance.
