국문 초록

본고는 이해조의 「구마검」(1908),「산천초목」(1912),「화의 혈」(1911)을 일련의 연장선상에서 살펴보는 것을 통해 이해조 신소설에 나타나는 사실성의 의미와 지향의변화를 살펴보았다.이해조는 소설을 통해 당대 사회가 가지고 있던 문제들을 지적해왔다.이때 작가의 목소리가 당위성을 갖기 위해서는 당대 현실에 대한 객관적인 파악이 선행되어야만 한다.이해조 신소설에서의 사실성은 이러한 계몽의 목소리에 대한당위성과 관련이 깊다. 「구마검」에서의 사실성은 이를 단적으로 보여준다.객관적인 시선으로 사건의 인과관계를 살펴보는 것을 통해 당대 대중을 현혹하는 민간신앙이 가진 허구성을 폭로하고 그것을 한낮 미신으로 격하시키는 과정이 선명하게 드러나기 때문이다.문제는이처럼 작품의 사실성이 계몽의 목소리에 대한 당위성을 증명한다 하더라도 독자가그것을 ‘신뢰’할 수 있는가라는 지점에 있다.「산천초목」은 이러한 한계를 맞이한 작가의 변화를 보여준다.여기에서 이해조는 신문기사와 실존했던 공간·인물에 집중한다.당대 현실을 있는 그대로 묘사하는 실체적 사실성을 통해 작가의 시선이 객관적이고 신뢰할 수 있음을 증명하고 있는 것이다.그러나 역설적으로 「산천초목」에서 자리한 계몽의 목소리는 이러한 실체적 사실성을 향한 집착에 의해 서사의 전면으로 드러나지 못하고 희미한 잔향으로만 남게 된다. 이러한 한계와 다시 한번 직면한 작가가 나아간 자리가 ‘재미’를 강조하는 「화의혈」이다.여기에서 작가는 실제 현실에 대한 집착에서 벗어나 허구의 자리에 사실성의 기반을 마련하고,사실성을 독자의 흥미와 연결시킨다.그리고 이러한 허구의 사실성에 의지하여 미신과 같은 세태풍속을 소비의 영역으로 끌어내린다.이 지점에서 이해조가 강조하는 ‘재미=흥미’는 단순한 쾌락을 의미하지 않는다.그것은 실제 현실이라는 한계를 넘어 이해조가 도달한 민중계몽의 또 다른 방식이다.

영문 초록

This paper examined the changes in the meaning and orientation of reality in Lee Hae-jo’s new novels by examining “Gumageom”(1908), “Sancheonchomok”(1912), and “HwauiHyeol”(1911) in a series of extensions. Lee Hae-jo has pointed out the problems that society had at the time through novels. At this time, for the novelist's voice to be justified, an objective grasp of the reality of the time must be preceded. The reality of the new novel Lee Hae-jo is deeply related to the justification for this voice of enlightenment. The reality in “Gumageom” clearly shows this. This is because the process of exposing the fictitious nature of folk beliefs that mislead the public of the time and downgrading it to a midday superstition is revealed by examining the causal relationship of the event with an objective perspective. The issue is whether the reader can ‘trust’ the work, even if the reality of the work proves the justification for the voice of enlightenment. “Sancheonchomok” shows the change of the novelist in confrontation with these limitations. In “Sancheonchomok”, Lee Hae-jo focuses on newspaper articles, real spaces, and characters. It proves that the novelist’s gaze is objective and reliable through substantive reality that describes the reality of the time as it is. Paradoxically, however, the voice of enlightenment in “Sancheonchomok” cannot be revealed to the front of the narrative due to this substantive reality and remains only a faint reverberation. The point where the artist, faced with these limitations once again, reached is “HwauiHyeol”, which emphasizes ‘fun.’ In this novel, the author breaks away from his obsession with true reality, lays the foundation for reality in a fictional place, and connects reality to the reader’s interest. And it draws superstitious customs into the realm of consumption by relying on this fictional reality. Therefore, the ‘fun = interest’ emphasized by Lee Hae-jo does not mean simple pleasure. It is another way of people’s enlightenment that Lee Hae-jo has reached beyond the limits of true reality.
