국문 초록

이 글은 유종호 문학 전반에 걸쳐 나타나는 한국 문학의 로컬리티를 살펴보고자 한다. 주지하다시피 로컬리티는 기존의 견고한 중심과 주변의 위계를 해체하고, 나아가 주변 로컬이 지니는 고유한 특성을 인식할 수 있는 매개라는 점에서 주목되는 개념이다. 이러한 로컬리티 개념은 한국 문학 연구에도 중요한 시사점을 제공해 주는 바, 서구의 근대적 문학을 일종의 절대적인 ‘전범’으로 설정하고, 주변부에 위치한 한국 문학을 이러한 전범에 대한 모방과 이식의 결과로 간주하는 연구의 편향을 극복할 수 있기 때문이다. 유종호는 1950년대부터 60년대에 이르는 초기 비평을 통해 문학 언어에 대한 심도 깊은 탐구를 수행한다. 그는 로컬 언어인 ‘토착어’에 대한 발견을 통해 당대 전후문학에서 범람하던 서구적 관념어에 대한 비판적 인식을 보이며, 나아가 ‘토착어’와 ‘관념어’를 뛰어 넘는 문학 언어에 대한 사유를 펼친다. 이러한 인식을 토대로 하여, 유종호는 1970년대부터 80년대에 이르는 시기, 장르론적 문제설정을 통해 주변부 문학 양식을 사적으로 계보화하는 비평적 자의식을 보여준다. 2000년대 이후 유종호는 이전 시기 수행한 작업을 토대로 하여, 한국 문학의 고유한 로컬리티를 시로 형상화한다. 그의 시들은 서구 근대 문학 정전을 한국이라는 로컬적 특성에 맞게 변용하거나, 혹은 로컬리티를 통해 중심과 주변의 위계를 전복하는 양상을 보인다. 이와 같은 유종호의 60여 년 이상 지속된 한국 문학과 로컬리티에 대한 문학적 탐색은, 서구 근대 문학과는 변별되는 주변부 장르의 계보 속에서 한국 문학을 새롭게 조망하는 시각을 보여준다는 점에서 중요한 성과로 평가될 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

This article aims to examine the locality of Korean literature that appears throughout Yoo Jongho’s literature. As is well known, locality is a concept that is noteworthy in that it is a medium that can dismantle the existing solid center and periphery hierarchy, and further recognize the unique characteristics of the local area. This concept of locality also has important implications for the study of Korean literature, as it can overcome the bias of research that sets modern Western literature as an absolute criterion and considers Korean literature located around it as a result of imitation and transplantation of these criterion. Yoo Jongho conducts an in-depth exploration of literary language through early criticism from the 1950s to the 60s. Through his discovery of the local native language, he shows a critical perception of Western ideological words that flooded post-war literature of the time, and further reveals his thoughts on literary languages beyond native language and ideological language. Based on this perception, Yoo Jongho shows a critical self-consciousness that historically genealogizes the periphery genre through genre-based problem setting from the 1970s to the 80s. Since the 2000s, Yoo Jongho has embodied the unique locality of Korean literature in poetry based on the work performed in the previous period. His poems transform the Western modern literary canon to suit the local characteristics of Korea, or subvert the central and periphery hierarchies through locality. Yoo Jongho’s literary search for Korean literature and locality, which has lasted for more than 60 years, can be regarded as an important achievement in that it shows a new perspective on Korean literature in the genealogy of the periphery genres distinct from Western modern literature.
