국문 초록

해방에서 한국전쟁에 이르는 시기 한반도를 둘러싼/관통한 경계들은 무수히 많이 생산되었지만, 크게 보아 그것은 한일 간의 경계와 남북한 사이의 경계를 (재)획정하는 작업의 산물이었다. 그리고 그러한 경계들이 획정되는 가운데 귀환과 인양, 월남과 월북, 전쟁 동원과 피난 등 경계를 넘는 다양한 이동의 양상들이 나타났다. 이 글에서는 이러한 점을 감안해 해방 이후부터 한국전쟁기에 이르기까지 황순원, 손소희, 박해준의 단편소설에 나타난 ‘밀항자’ 표상에 주목하였다. 국가의 경계 ‘밖’으로 이동한 그들은 제국-식민지 체제에서 탈식민-냉전 체제로 전환되는 동아시아 지역 질서와 남북한 냉전-분단 체제를 비판적으로 사유할 수 있는 가능성을 몸으로 체현하고 있는 자들이라는 점에서 주목된다. 해방기 밀항자들은 단순히 체제 변동 과정 속에서 경계 구획과 그 틈을 상징적으로 보여주는 데 그치는 것이 아니라, 남북한과 한일을 둘러싼 탈식민-냉전 체제의 정치경제적 질서가 기실 제국-식민지 체제의 잔여로 계속되고 있음을 보여준다. 또한 한국전쟁기 밀항자는 불법을 저지른 자이자 전쟁의 동원 문법으로부터 이탈한 자로 나타난다. 그들 불온한 자에 대한 검열과 국가로부터의 이탈자에 대한 처벌은 해방 이후 월경자로서 밀항자가 어떻게 존재 (불)가능한가를 확인케 한다. 이처럼 밀항은 바로 이 자명한 것 내부에 도사리고 있는 탈식민-냉전 체제 형성 과정에서 국가주의 권력이 어떻게 생명정치의 대상으로 인구를 위치시키고 통치했는가를 가늠할 수 있게 한다. 뿐만 아니라 국가의 밖으로 미끄러져가는 개인의 행위와 욕망을 불법적인 영역 속에 은폐하는 것을 통해 다시금 통치성을 강화해가는 국가에 의문을 제기한다는 점에서 20세기 중반 한국인의 월경의 형식 중 새롭게 조명될 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

In the period from liberation to the Korean War, countless borders surrounding/ penetrating the Korean peninsula were produced, but from a large perspective, they were the product of (re)defining the boundaries between Korea and Japan and between North and South Korea. And while those boundaries were being defined, various aspects of movement beyond the boundaries appeared, such as return and salvage, went to North and South Korea, Korean war mobilization and evacuation. Considering these points, this article paid attention to the ‘stowaways’ from the liberation period to the Korean War. Moving ‘outside’ the borders of the country, they are noteworthy in that they embody the possibility of critically thinking about the East Asian regional order and the Cold War-division system of South and North Korea, which are transitioning from the imperial-colonial system to the post-colonial-Cold War system. The stowaways during the liberation period do not stop at simply symbolically showing the boundary division and the gap in the process of system change, but show that the political and economic order of the postcolonial-Cold War system surrounding South and North Korea and Korea-Japan continues as a remnant of the empire-colonial system in fact. Also, stowaways during the Korean War appear as those who commit illegal acts and those who deviate from the rules of mobilization for war. The censorship of those who are disobedient and the punishment of those who have deserted from the state confirms how stowaways exist (im)possible as cross-borderers after liberation. In this way, smuggling makes it possible to gauge how the nationalist power positioned and ruled the population as an object of bio-politics in the process of forming the post-colonial-Cold War system that lurks within this self-evident thing. In addition, it is necessary to shed new light on the form of Korean border crossing in the mid-20th century in that it raises questions about the state that reinforces its governance by concealing individual acts and desires that slip outside the state in the illegal realm.
