국문 초록

이 글의 목적은 연작소설인 ｢제퇴선｣과 ｢요지경｣에 대한 세밀한 읽기를 진행하고 이 텍스트에 담긴 풍부한 의미와 맥락을 밝혀내는 것이다. ｢제퇴선｣과 ｢요지경｣은 김남천이 여러 차례 언급한 것처럼 ‘고발문학론’의 문학적 실천이다. 이 텍스트는 의학 권력과 아편중독이 자본주의적으로 결탁한 당대의 타락한 사회상을 탐구하고 있는 최초의 문학적 사례이며, 전향한 사회주의자의 분열된 내면을 중독이란 매개를 통해 고백하고 있는 문제적 작품이다. ｢제퇴선｣의 향란을 중심에 놓고 보자면 그녀의 몸에 주사를 꼽고 이윤을 빨아대는 사람은 하나둘이 아니다. 마약 투약도, 치료도, 중독을 끊기 위한 재활도, 육체의 내성으로 인해 더욱 많은 양을 요구하게 되는 아편제의 밀매도, 모두 병원을 통해 이루어진다. 병원에 약을 공급하는 제약사까지 포함한다면 거대한 산업이 향란의 몸에서 돈을 뽑아내는 방식으로 작동하고 있다. 식민지 당국의 단속으로 아편굴은 더욱 어두운 음지나 만주로 숨어 들어갔고, 병원이 양지의 아편굴이 되었다. 식민지 조선의 고통은 거대한 이윤을 발생시키는 산업이 된 것이다｢요지경｣은 ‘중독’과 ‘전향’이라는 두 개의 모티프를 단편이라는 문학적 형식을 통해 의미 있게 구현하고 있는 단편이며 그것의 미학적 성취도 김남천의 대표작으로 꼽히는 다른 작품과 비교해도 뒤지지 않는 수준을 보여주고 있다. 또한 ｢요지경｣의 몇몇 에피소드는 1937년 김남천이 발표한 비평 ｢유다적인 것과 문학｣을 다른 방식으로 해석할 수 있는 흥미로운 관점을 제공한다고 판단한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this article is to reveal the rich meaning and context contained in this text by conducting a detailed reading of the series of novels Je Twe Sun and Yo Ji Kyung. As Kim Nam-cheon mentioned several times, Je Twe Sun and Yo Ji Kyung are literary practices of ‘Doctrine of the Denunciation Literature’. This text is the first literary example of exploring the corrupt social image of the time when medical power and opium addiction are colluded, and it is a problematic work that confesses the divided inner side of a converted socialist through addiction. Focusing on Hyang-ran, the main character of Je Twe Sun, many people inject her body and exploit profits. Drugs, treatments, rehabilitation, trafficking are all done through hospitals. Including pharmaceutical companies that supply drugs to hospitals, a huge industry is working by extracting money from Hyangran’s body. The crackdown by the colonial police led the opium den to hide in darker shade, and the hospital became the new opium den. The suffering of colonial Joseon has become an industry that generates huge profits Yo Ji Kyung is a short story that meaningfully embodies the two motifs of ‘addiction’ and ‘conversion’ through the literary form of a short story. Its aesthetic achievement is also comparable to other works that are considered representative works of Kim Nam-cheon. In addition, some episodes of Yo Ji Kyung are judged to provide an interesting perspective to interpret the criticism ｢Judic and Literature｣ published by Kim Nam-cheon in 1937 in a different way.
