〈최척전〉의 문학지리학적 해석과 소설교육

국문 초록

필자는 이 연구에서 <최척전>에 그려진 동아시아 공간을 문학지리학(literary geography)의 관점에서 분석하고, 이를 소설교육에 활용하는 방식에 대해 고찰하였다. 구체적으로 일본, 중국, 베트남(안남), 해상 이동경로 등의 공간배경을 실제 지역공간과 대조하여 살폈는데, 이를 통하여 소설 창작수법의 매우 미묘한 국면을 알 수 있었다. 조위한은 자신의 체험과 독서경험과 풍문을 바탕으로 아무도 가보지 못한 동아시아 지역을 형상화하였다. <최척전>에 그려진 동아시아 공간은 사실적인 것 같으면서도, 부정확하고 모호한 정보에 바탕하여, 소략하게 그려지거나 사실과 어긋나게 설정된 점이 적지 않았다. 그리고 옥영이 귀국한 해상 이동경로는 분석 결과, 전적으로 허구임을 알 수 있었다. 하지만 조위한은 이러한 공간설정 방식을 통하여 ‘가족의 재회’라는 주제를 실현하였다. 이러한 이해를 바탕으로 다음과 같이 소설교육을 할 수 있다. 첫째, <최척전>에 그려진 동아시아 공간 배경이 된 곳에 대해서 학습자들이 조사해보도록 한다. 둘째 동아시아 공간의 형상화와 주제 실현 간의 관계를 논의한다. 셋째, 문학지리학의 관점에서 <최척전>에 그려진 지역 공간이 어떠한 이미지를 남겼는지를 분석한다. 넷째, <최척전>에 발견된 지역 이미지와 동아시아 유대 관계를 현재적으로 어떻게 활용할 것인지를 논의한다.

영문 초록

Choi Cheok Jeon, which depicts East Asia, is analyzed from a literary geographic perspective, and a method that can be utilized in literary education is considered. In specific, the spatial background, the paths from Japan, to China, Vietnam was compared with the actual regional spaces, and through this I can understand the very subtle aspects of the creation technique used in the novel. Jo Wui-han described the regional space of East Asia based on his own experiences and vicarious experiences from reading books. The regional space of East Asia described in Choi Cheok Jeon seems to be real, but is simply depicted based on inaccurate and obscure information, and there are many parts that are not matched in actual spatial data. The analysis of the marine route that Ok-yeong took on her way back to the country showed that it was completely fictional. However, Jo Wui-han realized a family reunion using the method of space-setting. Based on this understanding, we can provide students with education as follows. First, we can have students research the regions used for the setting of the novel. Second, we can discuss the relationship between spatial depiction and realization of the subject. Third, we can analyze what images the regional space of East Asia described in Choi Cheok Jeon provides. Fourth, we can discuss whether we can utilize the relationship between the regional images found in Choi Cheok Jeon and East Asia in the current era.
