국문 초록

이 연구는 독립협회의 토론 문화를 통해 ‘토론’의 기본 정신과 원론적 의미를 살펴보는 데 그 목적이 있다. 최근 의사소통에 대한 높은 관심으로 ‘토론’ 교육이 주목되는 데 반해, 실제 수업 현장에서 이루어지는 토론은 만족스럽지 않은 것이 사실이다. 토론 교육이 ‘소통’의 기능에 역점을 두기 보다 자기 주장을 인증하기 위한 논증 과정에 역점을 두면서 토론의 목적이 제 기능을 다하지 못했기 때문이다. 이는 토론의 목적과 정신이 부적절하게 전제되는 데서 빚어진 것이다. 토론의 목적은 ‘의사 전달’에 있는 것이 아니라 민주적 형식으로서의 ‘소통’에 있다. 근대 초기 이루어진 독립협회의 토론 문화는 ‘토론’의 기본 정신을 살필 수 있는 좋은 사례이다. 찬반 구도를 통해 적극적인 의견 개진을 이루지만 토론의 주안점은 공동체의 합의와 동의에 놓여진다. 즉 토론의 결과로서 산출된 ‘공론’이 상호주관적인 민주적 형식 안에서 출현하고 있는 것이다. 이 연구에서는 이러한 토론의 역사를 통해, 토론 교육에서 부각되어야 할 목적과 정신이 무엇인지 생각해 보고자 한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to investigate the debate culture of the early modern age, and again to examine principled meaning that laid in ‘debate’. Recently ‘debate’ has drawn attention on account of highly increased attention and interest in communication, meanwhile, it is pointed out that ‘communication function’ of debate in the locale of school education has been weakened. It is obvious that this has been resulted from inappropriate acceptance of the objectives and spirit of debate. The objective of debate is ‘communication’ by means of democratic form. When reviewing the debate culture of the Independence Association that occurred in the early modern age, the objective of ‘arguments for and against’ was not concluded as by individual fight, however, the composition of pros and cons of debate had been accepted as the means so as to make it ‘public debate.’ In the early modern age, ‘debate’ was aimed at accomplishing ‘communication’ like agreement or consent, rather than focusing on drawing public debate. It is required to think of what the current objectives that should be highlighted in debate education are through such transference of debate.
