국문 초록

필자는 청원군[청주시와의 통합 이전] 읍면의 법정리 이름을 대상으로, 그것이 자연리 이름의 어원을 얼마나 잘 반영하고 있는가에 대해 여러 차례 논의해 왔다. 본고는 이런 일련의 작업 중 마지막 결과로, 옥산면과 북이면의 7개 법정리 이름을 대상으로 삼았다. 기존의 연구를 통해, 우리는 법정리를 명명할 때에는 매우 다양한 방법이 적용됨을 알았다. 그 중 가장 흔한 것이 기존 자연리 이름을 이용하는 방법이다. 이는 이 방법이 비교적 손쉽기도 하거니와, 지명 자체가 가지고 있는 보수성을 되도록 손상하지 않으려는 배려 때문이기도 한 것이다. 그리고 고유어로 된 자연리 이름을 법정리 이름으로 한역할 때에는 음독법·음차법·훈독법·훈차법 등 차자표기나 동음이의자 사용 등 다양한 방식이 적용된다. 이 중 음독법이나 훈독법에 의한 것이 자연리 이름의 어원을 정확히 반영할 수 있다. 그러나 그렇지 못한 예가 대부분이다. 본고에서는 음차법·훈차법·동음이의자 사용 등에 의해 잘못 한역된 이름을 분석할 것이다.

영문 초록

I have discussed continuously about how well the names of Chinese-translated villages reflect the etymology of natural village names, based on the name of Cheongwon-gun [the name before integrating with Cheongju-si]. As a result of these works, the purpose of this paper is to examine the names of seven legally registered villages in Oksan-myeon and Buki-myeon. Through previous studies, we have found that a wide variety of methods are applied to name a legally registered villages. However, the most common way of naming the legally registered villages is to use the existing natural village names. This is because the method is comparatively easy. Moreover, it is likely to maintain the nature of the place name itself. In the case of naming a native tongue of the names of natural village translated into classical Chinese, various methods are used. The method of reading Chinese characters by their traditional pronunciation can accurately reflect the etymology of natural names. However, most cases are not. Along with this perspective, I further analyzed the process of translation into classical Chinese by targeting inaccurate Chinese-translated names, due to both incorrect phonetic methods and homophones.
