국문 초록

겸재 조태억은 조선후기 소론계열의 대표적인 문인 중 한 사람으로, 그 당대에 뛰어난 문학적 명망을 누렸던 인물이다. 그러나 그와 같은 명성에도 불구하고 아직까지 조태억의 문학세계 전반에 대한 종합적인 연구가 이루어지지 못하고 있으며, 그의 문학론에 대해서는 전혀 논의되지 않고 있다. 이런 상황은 무엇보다 그가 자신의 문학론에 대한 글을 전혀 남기지 않았다는 자료의 한계에 기인한 것이라고 생각된다. 그러나 조태억의 문학에 대해 언급한 글이나 조태억이 다른 문인과 작품에 대해 논의한 글을 살펴보면 그의 문학론을 엿볼 수 있다. 조태억의 문학에 대한 언급은 조태억이 수식이나 기교보다 작자의 감정과 글의 내용을 위주로 시문을 창작했으며, 그 시문은 자연스럽고 원만하여 표현과 구도가 모두 적절했고, 시의 창작에서는 시상과 시어의 구상과 활용이 자연스럽고 능숙했으며 새로움을 추구하여 기교에 가득한 시를 부정했다는 것인데, 이런 언급은 조태억이 다른 문인과 작품에 대해 논의한 내용과 유사한 모습을 보여준다. 조태억은 문인과 작품에 대한 논의에서 시문에 드러난 작자 정서의 진실성을 무엇보다 중시했으며, 그렇기 때문에 형식적이고 수사적인 면보다 시문의 내용과 시문에 담긴 작자의 정서에 주목했고, 시문의 창작을 위한 학습과 훈련을 강조하여 작자의 내면에 쌓인 것이 자연스럽게 드러날 때 뛰어난 시문이 된다고 여겼다. 따라서 그는 많은 힘을 쓰거나 기이하거나 기교에 가득한 시어를 사용하려고 애쓸 필요가 없다고 여겼다. 그런데 조태억의 문학론을 이렇게 정리하면 그의 문학론은 그 시대의 보편적인 문학론에서 그다지 벗어나지 않는다. 그렇다면 이렇게 정리한 조태억의 문학론은 조태억의 문학론이라기보다 시대의 보편적인 문학론이 되고, 조태억은 그와 같은 보편적인 문학론을 최대한 수용하여 작품을 창작하고 비평한 인물이 된다. 하지만 그의 문학론이 그 시대의 보편적인 문학 인식과 같은 궤에 있고, 그가 그러한 문학론에 따라 작품을 창작하고 평가했다고 해서 그의 문학론과 그가 창작한 작품의 문학적 가치가 상실된다고 볼 수는 없다. 그것은 어떤 작자가 한 시대의 보편적 인식과 같은 인식을 지녔고, 또 그 인식에 가장 부합하는 작품을 창작했다는 것만으로 작품의 질적 가치에 대한 검토 없이 그 사람의 인식과 그가 창작한 작품의 가치를 폄하하는 것은 결코 정당한 평가가 될 수 없기 때문이다.

영문 초록

Gyeumjae Jotaeeok is one of the representative literary figures of Soron Faction in the late Joseon Dynasty and enjoyed excellent literary reputation in that era. Despite such reputation, however, there has not been a comprehensive study on the entire literary world of Jotaeeok, and his literary theory has not been discussed at all. This situation is thought to be due to the limitations of the data that he did not leave a writing his literary theory. However, if you look at the articles that evaluated Jotaeeok's literature or the articles that Jotaeeok evaluated other writers and works, you can get a glimpse of his literary theory. The evaluation of Jotaeeok's literature is that his work is based on writer's feelings and contents of writings rather than rhetoric or technical skill, and poetry and prose are natural, both expression and composition are appropriate, and in the creation of poetry, the design and utilization of poetical imagination and poetic word are natural, and proficient. He denied poetry full of technique by pursuing newness. This assessment is similar to the assessment that Jotaeeok made for other writers and works. In his evaluation of literary works and writer, Jotaeeok emphasized the authenticity of the author's emotion revealed in poetry and prose, so he focused on the contents of poetry and prose and the author's emotion contained in poetry and prose rather than formal and rhetorical aspects, and emphasized the learning and training for the creation of poetry and prose, and when the accumulated inside of the author was naturally revealed, the poetry and prose was considered to be excellent. He therefore considered that he did not have to try to use a lot of power, a strange or a poetic word full of technique. However, if Jotaeeok's literary theory is summarized like this, his literary theory does not deviate much from the universal literary theory of the period. If so, Jotaeeok's literary theory is not Jotaeeok's literary theory but rather a universal literary theory of the times. And Jotaeeok accepts such universal literary theory as much as possible and creates and criticizes the work. However, his literary theory is in the same position as the universal literary awareness of the period. But his literary theory and work's literary value are not lost just because he created and evaluated his works according to such literary theory. It is because it has the same perception as the universal perception of an era and it is not a legitimate evaluation to lower the person's perception and the value of the work he created because he created the work that most meets the perception.
