일제강점기 현풍 도동서원의 현실과 대응

국문 초록

이 논문은 조선시대 서원에 대한 연구성과를 바탕으로 일제강점기 서원의 사회적 역할과 의미를 찾기 위해 연구 확장을 시도했다. 연구 대상 사례는 경상도 현풍의 도동서원이다. 도동서원은 조선시대 현풍의 으뜸 서원으로 지역 사회와 영남에서의 영향력이 높았다. 도동서원은 47개의 미훼철 서원 중 하나로 현대사회까지 운영을 위한 지속성을 확보하고 있었다. 이런 사유로 19세기 말에서 20세기 초까지 서원의 유지와 중건을 위한 별도의 활동이 필요하지 않았다. 지역적 기반이 강했던 도동서원은 일제강점 이후에도 활동을 계속했다. 서원은 여전히 현풍 일대에 세거하는 현풍곽씨와 서흥김씨에 의해 주도되고 있었다. 서원 운영을 위한 재정적 지원을 위해 별도로 보원계를 조직하였다. 보원계의 구성은 현풍현 일대 유력 사족들이 중심이었으나 경상도 일대의 유림도 참여하고 있어 확장성을 찾을 수 있다. 서원 운영을 위한 재정적 위기에 봉착하면서 堂會를 통한 의결을 시도했다. 당회에서는 도지의 매각이나 금융지원, 보원계 계금의 활용을 논의하였는데, 여기에는 교육 기능에 대한 언급은 없으며 향사의 지속성을 목적에 두고 있었다. 일제강점기 도동서원은 조선시대 서원 주도 세력이 여전히 서원의 핵심 구성원이었으며, 영남 일대 유림들의 출입으로 사회활동과 교유의 공간을 제공하고 있었다. 서원은 시대적 상황에 따라 교육의 기능을 상실하고 향사도 재정적 문제로 축소하였으며, 만성적 재정 위기에 봉착하면서 재산에 대한 매각과 금융차입 등을 통한 해결을 모색하고 있었다.

영문 초록

This paper attempted to expand the research to find the social role and meaning of Japanese colonial era Seowon (Confucian Academy) based on the research results on Seowon during the Choson Dynasty. Dodong Seowon, Confucian Academy, was the first Confucian academy of Hyeonpung area of the Choson Dynasty and had a high influence in the Yeongnam local community. Dodong Confucian Academy was 47 unbroken Confucian academies, and from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, there was no need for separate activities to rebuild the Confucian Academy. Dodong Confucian Academy, which had a strong regional base, was strongly operated by dominant clans such as Hyeonpung Gwak and Seoheung Kim Clans, who lived in Hyeonpung area even after the Japanese colonial era. A supplementary system was separately organized to provide financial support for the operation of the Seowon. The composition of the Bowon- Kye, community for financial supporting Dodong Seowon, was centered on influential people in the Hyeonpung area, but Confucian scholars in the Yeongnam area also participated and contributed to the operation of the Seowon through the system. However, in the face of a financial crisis for the operation of the Confucian academy, the council was convened to discuss the sale of provincial land, financial support, and the use of the Bowon-Kye. But there was no mention of educational functions, and the purpose was the continuity of the village. Japanese colonial era Dodong Seowon, Confucian Academy, was still a key member of Seowon during the Choaon Dynasty, and provided a space for social activities and exchanges through the entrance and exit of Confucian scholars in Yeongnam area.
