〈백학선전〉에 수용된 백학의 상징성 고찰

국문 초록

이 논문은 〈백학선전〉에 수용된 백학의 상징적 의미에 관해 고찰한 것이다. 그 내용을 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 백학의 문학적 활용에 관해 살펴보았다. 예로부터 우리 조상들은 학을 신성한 동물로 여겨왔다. 학이 갖는 상징적인 의미로는 신성함, 지조와 절개, 고결한 품성, 내면에 깃든 강인함을 들 수 있으며, 이러한 상징성은 고전문학 작품에 두루 수용되어 문학적으로 활용되었다. 둘째, 인물에 수용된 학의 상징적 의미에 관해 살펴보았다. 백학이 지닌 백색은 우리 조상들이 신성시한 색으로 그 안에는 신성함, 지조와 절개, 순결함의 뜻을 담고 있다. 〈백학선전〉은 백학을 통해 태몽에서는 천상의 신성함을, 태어날 인물에는 고귀함을 상징화하였다. 또한 백학이 갖는 순결함을 사악함이 없는 올곧은 선비정신으로, 일편단심의 믿음은 고난을 극복하는 강인함으로 확대하여 인물의 성격에 수용하였다. 셋째, 백학의 상징적 의미로 본 문학적 의의를 살펴보았다. 〈백학선전〉은 부채에 그려진 백학의 상징적인 의미에 무게를 두어 백학이 갖는 상징성을 작품 전반에 두루 수용하여 표제로서의 의미를 강화했다. 또한 남녀의 애정을 통해 지조와 절개를 드러내는 가운데 여성 인물의 영웅적인 면모를 도술이라는 판타지적 요소를 활용하여 긴장감과 재미를 극대화하여 문학적 묘미를 강화했다. 요컨대 인물 중심의 전에서 벗어나 소재가 갖는 상징적 의미를 작품 전반에 두루 수용해 다양한 주제의식을 표출시킨 작품이 바로 〈백학선전〉이라 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper examined the symbolic meaning of Baekhak drawn in the fan focusing on the Baekhakseon, the material of 〈Baekhakseonjeon〉. The contents are summarized as follows. First, the literary application of Baekhak was examined. Cranes have been regarded as sacred animals symbolizing fidelity and integrity from ancient times. The symbolic meanings of the crane include sacredness, fidelity and integrity, noble character, and internalized strength, and this symbolism was variously accepted in the classics and applied literarily. Second, the narrative function of Baekhak was examined. If Baekhakseon was the subject that led the event, the character’s personality and behavior captured national sentiment with adopting the image and habits of Baekhak. Through the main character, Yu Baek-ro, it was expressed that the Seonbi Spirit, which was endowed with a firm attitude of noble and disinterested seonbi, and through Cho Eun-ha, a stout-hearted strength, which was undaunted by injustice, was shown. In addition, in the process of meeting, separation, and meeting between the two main characters, the national characteristics embracing fidelity and integrity were captured by reflecting on the habit of a crane’s life long together once a relationship is established. Third, it was examined that the literary significance of Baekhak as a symbolic meaning. 〈Baekhakseonjeon〉 tried to establish the order of Confucian society via the protagonists who combined the disinterested and the Seonbi Spirit, and the pride of the nation was inspired by capturing perseverance and true grit, which were undaunted by injustice. Allen stated that through 〈Baekhakseonjeon〉 he translated his works to correct false perceptions of Koreans and inform Korean lives and thoughts. In this sense, 〈Baekhakseonjeon〉 has a great significance in literary history in that it informs foreigners of the customs and life of Korean society, and the value of the work is also excellent since it captures the spirit and culture of the Korean people in work.
