국문 초록

본 논문은 재난 앞에서 인간과 세계의 형상이 어떠한지를 보여주는 재난 시뮬레이션으로서 〈지옥〉이 던지는 근원적인 질문을 분석해 보는 데 목표를 둔다. 또한 본 논문은 〈지옥〉이 재난 시대를 통과하는 현 시대인에게 던지는 유의미한 사유가 무엇이며, 하나의 드라마가 사유를 확장하거나 인식의 전환을 가능케 하는 전복적인 텍스트로 기능할 수 있음을 밝혀내고자 한다. 글로벌 플랫폼 넷플릭스를 통해 전 세계 190개국에 공개된 〈지옥〉은 공개 24시간 만에 드라마 부분 80개국 이상 1위를 기록하며 코리아 디스토피아의 새로운 가능성을 연 작품으로 평가받았다. 인간이 초월적 존재에게 죽음을 고지받게 되면서 벌어지는 충격적인 사건을 그린 〈지옥〉은 기존 연상호의 작품이 보여주었던 파국의 세계를 신과 종교의 문제로 확대한 역동성과 철학성을 함유한 문제작이다. ‘지옥’은 신에게 버림받은 자들의 종착지로서 종교적 의미와 아수라장이 된 인간과 세계라는 은유적 의미를 동시에 내포한다. 〈지옥〉은 후자에 방점을 두고 신의 개입 여부와 상관없이 인간에 의해 구성되는 세계는 지옥일 수밖에 없음을 보여주는 데 주력한다. 먼저 〈지옥〉은 신의 의도와 시연이라는 불가항력의 사건을 토대로 종교가 태동하는 과정과 신으로부터 출발한 종교가 신을 삭제한 채 오염되어 가는 과정을 다룬다. 그리고 이 과정에서 합리적이고 이성적이라 자부하던 인간의 기표 안에 존재하는 무정형의 폭력성을 고발하고 그러한 인간에 의해 구성되는 세계의 부정을 폭로한다. 나아가 〈지옥〉은 부정한 인간이 창조한 문화 그중에서도 미디어와 제도가 공의를 추구하고 인간을 보호하기보다 오히려 인간과 세계를 혼란하게 만드는 점을 함께 보여준다. 〈지옥〉은 미지의 존재가 인간 세계에 갑자기 출현하여 극한의 공포를 유발한다는 점에서는 코스믹 호러와 유사하지만, 처음부터 그들을 종교적 관점으로 접근한다는 점에서 변별된다. 즉 〈지옥〉은 인간의 권능을 넘어서는 존재를 상정하는 호모 렐리기오수스(Homo Religiosus)의 욕망을 자극하면서도 그것이 왜 종교가 아니라 판타지물로 간접 충족되는 시대가 되었는지를 보여주는 작품이다. 무엇보다 〈지옥〉의 모든 고발과 폭로의 과정은 인간이 충격과 공포로 점철된 ‘재난을 맞이한 상황’에서 출발한다. 그러한 점에서 〈지옥〉은 실제로 재난 시대와 그로 인한 공포 앞에 놓여 있는 바로 지금의 존재들에게 또 다른 의미를 제공할 유의미한 텍스트가 될 수 있다.

영문 초록

This study aims to analyze fundamental questions that 〈Hell Bound〉 asks, as a disaster simulation showing the figurations of human beings and the world in face of disasters. This study is also intended to consider significant thoughts that 〈Hell Bound〉 gives to contemporary people going through the age of disasters and indicate that a drama can function as a subversive text to expand thoughts or facilitate a paradigm shift. Ranking first place among dramas in over 80 countries within just 24 hours after it was unveiled in nearly 190 countries via the global platform, Netflix, 〈Hell Bound〉 was rated to be a work opening a new possibility of Korean dystopia. 〈Hell Bound〉 describes a shocking event when humans are notified of death by a transcendental existence and contains dynamics and philosophy by linking the world of catastrophe that has been revealed in Yeon Sang-ho’s existing works to an issue of God and religion. ‘Hell Bound’ includes a religious meaning as a final destination for those, who are deserted by God and a metaphorical meaning of human beings and the world in chaos, at the same time. Putting emphasis on the latter, 〈Hell Bound〉 focuses on showing that inevitably, hell is formed by human beings regardless of God’s involvement. Firstly, 〈Hell Bound〉 deals with the process in which religion quickens and the process in which religion starting from God becomes polluted deleting God, based on God’s intention and demonstration that is an irresistible event. It then discloses formless violence inside signifiers of human beings thinking themselves to be reasonable and rational and the dishonesty of the world formed by such humans. Furthermore, 〈Hell Bound〉 shows that media and systems expecially among cultures created by dishonest humans rather confuse humans and the world than pursue public righteousness and protect humans. Seeing that an unknown thing suddenly appears in the human world and causes an extreme fear, 〈Hell Bound〉 resembles cosmic horror, but this differentiates itself by approaching them from a religious viewpoint from the beginning. Namely, 〈Hell Bound〉 stimulates the desire of Homo Religiosus symbolizing an existence that transcends human authority and why it is indirectly satisfied as a fantasy, not a religion in the present age. Above all, all the processes of reporting and disclosing in 〈Hell Bound〉 start from a human ‘situation facing a disaster’ peppered with shock and fear. In this sense, 〈Hell Bound〉 can serve as a significant text to provide another meaning to the present age of disasters and contemporary people in fear of disasters.
