국문 초록

이 논문은 자유교육의 가치를 오늘의 교육 현실에서 의미있게 계승할 수 있는 방향을 설정해보기 위한 기초작업이다. 이를 위해 ‘자유’와 ‘비자유’라는 자유교육의 원형적인 대립 요소가 자유교육의 역사에서 어떻게 작동해왔으며 오늘의 문제 상황과 어떻게 이어져 있는지를 검토했다. 특히 현재 자유교 육의 가치를 위협하고 있는 역량담론을 자유교육의 내재적 특징과 관련하여 고찰했다. 역량담론을 자유교육의 역사적 전통 안에서 다중적으로 조명함으로써, 자유교육이 당면해있는 복합적인 정체성을 이해해보고자 했다. ‘자유로운(liberal)’이라는 개념과 그것이 필연적으로 불러오는 배타적인 영역은 자유교육이라는 오래 된 구조물의 복잡한 정체성을 직조하는 핵심원리였다. 역량담론은 ‘자유-비자유’의 대립 구조를 기반으 로 성장했으며, 자유의 영역까지 포섭하는 형태로 전개되어 왔다. 직업교육에 대한 사회적 요구가 강렬해지며 자유교육은 직업교육에 수사적 정당성을 부여해주는 상징적 신화로 이용되며, 그 가치는 시장 논리에 침윤되고 있다. 자유교육과 역량담론은 가치나 지향성이 근본적으로 다르다. 두 영역의 잠재적 갈등 요소와 교착지점을 인지함으로써, 자유교육의 현실을 중층적으로 조망할 수 있으며, 차후 방향을 설정해볼 수 있다. 역량담론이 압도하는 교육현실에서 자유교육은 인간 정신의 구심점을 제공해 줄 지식의 지평을 재정비해야 한다.

영문 초록

Liberal education has represented the ideal and standard form of education that contains the essential value of education. Liberal education values the exploration of knowledge that holds truth beyond life. This is because knowledge itself has an intrinsic value of being “liberal.” Nonetheless, how being “liberal” actually liberates human beings cannot be explained. This very characteristic of liberal education has been criticized for making knowledge a priori dogma and for distancing people from the fullness of real life. Liberal education, an elite education for liberal citizens, is known to be exclusive and removed from the reality of the working class. While it is concentrated on the input of knowledge, it shows a structural vulnerability that it neglects in the output. Therefore, the demand for a specific curriculum and observable consequences that would liberate humans was bound to appear constantly. Competence-based education grew against this backdrop, and liberal education gradually diminished in importance due to being seen as overly speculative, old fashioned, and disconnected from reality. As the social demand for professional education intensifies, liberal education is being used as a symbolic myth that grants rhetorical justification to vocational education. Efforts to transform liberal education into competency-oriented training may backfire and often weaken the originality of liberal education and produce self-negating outcomes. The cooperation between liberal education and competency-based education should begin again not by meeting half-way, but by acknowledging differences and recognizing potential elements of conflict.
