외국인 유학생의 진로 개발 역량 분석 연구

국문 초록

이 연구는 외국인 유학생 대상 진로 교육을 위한 기초 연구로 외국인 유학생의 진로 개발 역량을 분석하는 데에 목적이 있다. 외국인 유학생이 국내 대학을 선택하는 이유는 선진화된 교육 환경에서의 학위취득과 더불어 진로 및 취업에 있어 선택의 폭을 넓히기 위해서이다. 이는 국내 외국인 유학생의 53%가 경영학을 비롯한 사회과학계열을 전공으로 선택하고 있다는 점에서도 확인이 가능하다. 그러나 국내 대학에는 외국인 유학생을 대상으로 한 진로 개발이나 취업 역량 강화 프로그램이 많지 않으며 일회적인 취업 박람회 수준에 그치고 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 외국인 유학생들을 대상으로 진로 개발 역량을 구체적으로 살펴 실제적인 도움을 줄 수 있는 교육과정 개발의 방향을 고민하였다. 이충구 (2020)에서 개발한 설문도구를 활용하여 서울 소재 S대학의 외국인 유학생 92명을 대상으로 온라인 설문을 실시하였다. 그 결과, 진로 개발 역량 가운데 가치와 태도 역량이 가장 높았으며 자기관리 역량이 가장 낮은 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 여학생보다는 남학생이 전반적으로 진로 개발 역량이 높았다. 그러나 전공, 학년, 한국어 수준 등은 진로 개발 역량과 유의미한 상관관계를 보이지 않았다. 즉, 경영학을 전공하거나 학년이 높아지거나 한국어 수준이 좋아지더라도 진로 개발 역량이 함께 성장하는 것은 아니라는 것을 의미한다. 진로 개발 역량은 차별화된 교육과정을 통하여 함양할 수 있는 것으로 외국인 유학생들의 진로 개발 역량의 특징을 반영한 교육과정 개발이 이루어져야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

As a groundwork of career path counseling for international students, this study aims at analyzing their competencies when it comes to their career development. Many foreign students choose Korean universities in order to receive degrees in a relatively advanced educational environment in the hopes of broadening their career options. The fact that 53% of international students in Korea are now majoring in the social sciences supports this viewpoint. However, many Korean universities have not yet provided a proper career counseling program, nor a competency development program for their international students, but rather only a handful of temporal job fairs. In light of this situation, this study sought a proper and practical way to design a curriculum more tailored to the career paths of our international students so as to help them improve their competencies. Utilizing the questionnaire from Lee (2020), the author conducted an online survey with 92 international students who study at universities in Seoul. The survey results show that of all the career development competencies, the value and attitude competencies scored the highest, whereas the self-management competency scored the lowest. In addition, male students generally have higher competencies than female students. The students’ chosen major, their period of study, and their Korean proficiency level do not show significant correlations with their competencies. This suggests career development competencies do not improve in conjunction with the aforementioned factors. Thus, in order for international students to improve their career development competencies, an independent, specialized curriculum that is well-fitted to their career paths seems necessary.
