다름을 대하는 두 가지 관점과 이에 대한 교양교육의 역할 제고

국문 초록

현대사회 규정하는 핵심적인 특성 중 하나는 ‘다름’의 부각이다. 과거 전통사회가 다름을 지양하고 통일성을 추구했다면, 현대사회는 다양한 종교, 정치, 문화, 철학적 관점의 존재를 거부할 수 없는 사회적 실존으로 인식한다. 이렇게 다름이 부각되는 사회적 실존 안에서 우리는 다름의 존재를 어떻게 받아들여야 하는 가에 관한 질문에 끊임없이 노출된다. 본 논문을 통해 논자는 다름의 존재를 이해하고 해석하는 두 가지 관점을 살펴보고, 이 두 가지 관점이 대학에서의 교양 교육의 정신에 시사하는 바가 무엇인지를 보이고자 한다. 이 둘 중 하나의 관점은 다름의 존재를 궁극적으로는 극복해야 하는 잠정적 단계로 받아들인다. 이에 따르면, 다양한 종교, 정치, 문화, 철학적 관점이 존재함은 결과적으로 하나의 객관적이며 보편적인 관점에 도달하는 과정에 있어 해소되어야 한다고 여겨진다. 다른 하나의 관점은 다름이 존재하는 현실 자체를 사회의 자연스러운 결과로 이해한다. 이 관점에 의하면, 다름의 현실은 무엇인가를 향해 나아가는 과정에 거쳐야 하는 잠정적인 상태가 아니라, 그 자체로 인간이 받아들여야 하는 자연스러운 상태라는 것이다. 이에 따르면, 중요한 것은 다원성의 현실을 더욱 드러내는 일이다. 이 두 관점은 지식에 관한 서로 상이한 인식론적 배경에서 기인하다. 인간, 사회, 자연에 대한 폭넓은 이해를 제공하고자 하는 대학의 교양교육은 이 두 관점에 대한 종합적인 지식을 알려주어야 할 의무가 있다 할 것이다. 논자는 이 두 가지 관점에 대한 종합적 지식을 전하는 데에 있어 전공 교육은 충분히 그 역할을 수행할 수 없으며, 교양교육의 정신만이 이 둘을 모두 담을 수 있는 유일한 교육의 정신이라는 점이라고 주장할 것이다.

영문 초록

One of the key characteristics that defines modern society is the emergence of ‘differences’. While traditional societies avoided ‘differences’ and sought unity, modern society recognizes the existence of diverse religious, political, cultural, and philosophical viewpoints as an undeniable given of a social existence. In this social existence where differences are highlighted, we are constantly exposed to the question of how to accept the existence of differences. Through this paper, the author examines two perspectives for understanding and interpreting the existence of differences, and attempts to show the effect that these two perspectives have on the spirit of general education in universities. The first perspective sees that the existence of various religious, political, cultural, and philosophical viewpoints should be resolved in the process of reaching one objective and universal viewpoint. Another view sees the existence of plural views on various topics, including philosophical, religious, and cultural views as the exact description of human living. According to this viewpoint, the reality of difference is not a tentative state that must undergo the process of moving toward something, but rather a natural state that humans must accept as such. These two views stem from different epistemological backgrounds regarding knowledge. In this article, the author argues that general education at universities, which aims to provide a broad understanding of humans, society, and nature, has an obligation to provide comprehensive knowledge when it comes to these two perspectives. The author further argues that university education focused on major subjects cannot sufficiently fulfill its role in conveying comprehensive knowledge concerning these two perspectives.
