국문 초록

본고는 『님의 침묵』 시편 전체의 서론 역할을 하는 작품 ｢군말｣을 독해함으로써 그 시집의 창작을 가능케 한 원리, 즉 시적 표현에 관한 근본 사유를 밝히고자 하였다. 먼저 ｢군말｣ 1행은 현실과 이념, 자연과 공동체라는 네 영역의 대등한 조화 속에서 생명이 생명을 살리는 관계가 곧 님과의 본래적 관계임을 표현한다. 이는 물질 영역과 정신 영역 중 어느 한쪽에 치우쳐온 동서양 재래 사상의 한계를 벗어난 것이라 할 수 있다. 다음으로 2행은 1행의 본래적 관계와 상반되는 님과의 비본래적 관계를 제시하며, 그 비본래성의 근본 원인이 자아의 자유에 관한 왜곡된 사유로부터 비롯함을 암시한다. 이는 칸트의 초월적 자아를 더욱 초월적으로 견인하는 량치차오(梁啓超)의 불교론과 달리, 보편적･초월적인 동시에 개체적･경험적인 진아(眞我)가 모든 사람에게 내재한다고 보는 『조선불교유신론』의 사유와 상통한다. 마지막으로 3행은 1~2행에서 전개한 님과 진아의 사유를 구체적 시공간 속의 시 창작이라는 사례로서 압축한 것에 해당한다고 볼 수 있다. 특히 3행의 ‘양’ 이미지는 만해에게 강렬한 미적 체험으로 다가온 공민왕의 <이양도>와 연동하는 것일 가능성이 있다는 점에서 민족 공동체의 자유가 곧 진아의 자유라는 사유, 그리고 본래적인 생명활동은 예술미와 같은 감각적 힘으로 표현된다는 사유를 암시한다. 요컨대 ｢군말｣은 개체적 감각을 통하여 거기에 내재한 님과의 우주적 관계를 표현하는 것이 시적 표현의 근본이며, 따라서 시적 표현은 본래적인 생명활동과 합치하는 것임을 밝힌 작품이라고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This research aimed to reveal Han Yong-Woon’s fundamental thought for poetic expression by reading his poem “Redundant Words,” which serves as the introduction to The Silence of Nim. Firstly, the first line of the poem expresses the authentic relationship with Nim. In that relationship, lives save each other and construct harmony with the four realms: reality and idea, nature and community. This thought of the relationship overcomes Eastern and Western traditions that do not escape from the dualism of material and spirit. Secondly, the second line of the poem suggests that the unauthentic relationship with Nim. The eventual cause of that is distorted consciousness about freedom of self. This thought affirms that the true self is not only universal but also singular. Lastly, the third line of the poem compressively presents the thought of the first and second lines. Especially, the image of “sheep” in the third line allegorizes both a crisis of community’s freedom and power of sensibility. Thus, Redundant Words reveals that the fundament of poetic expression is the authentic movement of life because it expresses universal substance through the power of singular sensibility.
