국문 초록

좀비는 부두교 문화권에 전승된 이야기를 대중문화에서 수용하여 형성한 캐릭터다.초기에는 다른 괴물들처럼 공포를 불러일으키는 대상으로 활용되었을 뿐이다.하지만 로메로(GeorgeA.Romero)의 영화를 통해 사회적 함의가 추가되고,컴퓨터 게임을 통해 엔터테인먼트 속성이 강화되었으며,세기말을 전후로 다양한 블록버스터작품으로 소비되기 시작한다.이러한 전개 과정에서 좀비 캐릭터의 속성이 변모했다. 특정 장르를 대표하는 요소로 인정받으며 별도의 서사를 구축하게 되었다.이러한 특징을 가지기에 좀비 서사는 장르의 유동성을 증명하는 사례로 인정된다. 한국에서도 좀비 서사의 수용이 이루어졌는데,연상호 감독이 발표한 일련의 좀비시리즈가 여기에 해당한다.그는 애니메이션<서울역>에서 좀비가 창궐하는 세계관을 제시했고,영화<부산행>에 사회적 함의를 반영했으며,영화<반도>를 통해서 엔터테인먼트를 강화했다.아울러 단편 애니메이션<집으로>와 웹툰<631>등을 통해서 세계관의 다양한 활용을 시도했다.이러한 창작활동이 모두 성취를 거둔 것은 아니지만,그의 작품들이 좀비 서사가 한국에서 주요 장르로 인정받게 만들었다는 점에서 의미가 있다.연상호의 좀비 시리즈는 좀비 서사의 전개 과정에 따라 변모해왔다. 아울러 작품의 발표 매체를 다변화하고,각 매체의 특성에 맞춰 서사를 전개했다는특징도 주목된다.이는 장르의 유동성을 인식하고 활용했다는 증거이자,이후 발표된좀비 관련 작품의 창작방법을 제시한다는 점에서도 가치를 가진다.

영문 초록

Zombie characters were formed when stories passed down in voodoo cultural belts were accepted by popular culture. Initially, they were used simply to arouse fear, like other monsters. However, through the films of George A. Romero, social undertones were added, entertainment attributes were strengthened through computer games, and at around the turn of the century, they began to feature in various blockbuster movies. Through such a process, the attributes of zombie characters began to change. They were acknowledged as a specific genre, and thus, a separate narrative was constructed. Due to such characteristics, zombie narratives proved the mobility of the genre. The zombie narrative was also accepted in Korea, evidenced in the zombie series by Director Yeon Sang-Ho. He created a world with a zombie outbreak in the animation Seoul Station, mirrored its social undertone in the movie Train to Busan, and reinforced the entertainment aspect in the movie Peninsula. Furthermore, he employed this world in the short animation To Home and the webtoon 631. Although not all his creative works were successful, they were significant in making the zombie narrative a major genre in Korea. Yeon Sang-Ho’s zombie series transformed in accordance with the development in the zombie narrative. Furthermore, the medium for presenting his works diversified and he developed narratives according to the features of each medium. This confirms that the mobility of the genre was recognized and used. Moreover, it presented a creative method for zombie-related works that were released later.
