국문 초록

본 논문은 예술 영역의 작품인 존 버거의 『다른 방식으로 보기』 주제적 측면을 분석하고, 이미지를 활용한 창의성 교육방법에 대한 구상을 제시한 것이다. 『다른 방식으로 보기』의 중심주제는 크게 세 가지로 볼 수 있다. 첫째, 대상이나 시각적 이미지를 바라보는 사회의 관습적 시선에 대해 문제를 제기하며, ‘보는 방식’의 다양성의 의미를 강조한다. 특히 버거는 전통적 미술비평의 단일한 시각 속에서 생겨난 과거 미술의 신비화를 비판하고, 복제 예술의 등장으로 인해 대중의 예술작품 향유와 작품해석의 다양성을 긍정적으로 평가한다. 둘째, 여성을 대상화 하는 누드화의 관습을 비판한다, 마지막으로 현대 이미지 시대의 문제에 대한 성찰로서, 특히 소비사회의 광고 문화에 대한 비판이다. 버거는 대중의 물질적 욕망을 자극하고 현실의 주요한 문제점을 은폐하는 광고의 기능에 대해 문제를 제기한다. 버거의 『다른 방식으로 보기』는 많은 시각적 이미지를 수록하고 있으므로, 이미지를 활용한 토의와 글쓰기를 통해 창의성 교육, 즉 비판적, 창의적 사고와 상상력 교육을 실행할 수 있다. 시각적 이미지의 활용은 ‘보는 것’이 ‘아는 것’에 영향을 미치는 이미지 범람의 시대에 학생들에게 익숙한 지각방식을 이용하는 것으로, 사고력, 상상력의 배양을 위해 효과적인 방법이다. 이와 같은 방법적 구상으로 할스의 그림을 자유롭게 해석하기, 마그리트의 <꿈의 열쇠>에 나타난 이미지를 새롭게 정의하기, 이미지를 결합한 자유 에세이 작성하기, 고전회화를 인용한 광고비평문 작성하기를 들 수 있다. 따라서 버거의 『다른 방식으로 보기』는 학생들의 읽기와 생각하기, 말하기와 글쓰기 활동을 연결하여 이미지 해석능력, 비판적 사고와 창의적 사고 능력, 상상력을 배양하기에 효과적인 텍스트로 간주된다.

영문 초록

This paper analyzes John Berger’s Ways of Seeing, an art classic, focusing on the thematic aspects and further presents an instruction plan for creativity education using visual image. There are three themes in Ways of Seeing. First, it questions the society’s conventional gaze toward an object or visual image and emphasizes the significance of diverse ways of seeing. Particularly, Berger criticizes mystification of past arts, which is caused by traditional art criticism’s singular viewpoint, and positively evaluates how reproduction of art enabled public’s appreciation of artworks and diverse interpretation on them. Secondly, Berger condemns the convention of objectifying women in nude painting. Lastly, he reflects on problems of the modern image era, criticizing the advertisement of consumer society. Berger problematizes function of advertisement which arouses public’s material desires and conceals important problems in the reality. As Berger’s Ways of Seeing includes many visual image, it is possible to perform creativity -that is, critical/creative thinking and imagination- education through discussions and writings using visual image. Utilization of an image is based on the use of familiar perceiving method to students, who are living in the era of image inundation, where ‘seeing’ directly affects ‘knowing.’ Interpreting Hal’s painting, redefining image in Magritte’s Key to Dreams, writing a free topic essay using image, and writing critical essays on advertisement are the examples. In conclusion, Berger’s Ways of Seeing is considered as an effective text to cultivate students’ visual image interpretation ability, critical and creative thinking, and imagination through reading, thinking, speaking and writing activities.
