국문 초록

연구는 어떤 집단 내에서의 비율 비교 결과가 그 집단의 부분집단 내에서의 비율 비교 결과들과 상이하게 나타나는 현상인 Simpson의 역설(paradox)이 발생했을 때의 비교 대상 비율들을 추정하고 비율 간 비교를 위한 검정과 구간 추정을 실시하는 방법들을 제안한다. 예시를 위해서 1973년 UC Berkeley 대학원 입학 자료를 사용하여 Simpson의 역설이 어떻게 발생하는지를 설명하고, 상호작용 로짓 모형을 통하여 각 비율을 추정하고 오즈비(odds ratio)를 비율 비교 측도로 사용하여 관련 검정과 구간 추정을 실행한다. 상호작용 로짓 모형을 내포(nested) 로짓 모형으로 재표현하여 각 부분집단 내에서 차이 양상들을 한 눈에 파악하는 방법도 제시한다. 본 논문에서의 방법들은 SAS/STAT의 PROC CATMOD와 PROC GENMOD 절차들에 의하여 쉽게 실행될 수 있다.

영문 초록

This article proposes how to perform the estimation of proportions, testing and interval estimation for the comparison of proportions in the presence of Simpson’s paradox, which is a phenomenon that the result of a proportion comparison within a group is different from the results of proportion comparisons within the subgroups of that group. How Simpson’s paradox occurs is explained using the 1973 Berkeley admissions data, and how to estimate the proportions of interest and conduct testing and interval estimation for the comparison of proportions is described using the interaction logit model fitted to the same data. Reexpressing the interaction logit model with the nested logit model to see the within-subgroup comparison results at a glance is also mentioned. The proposed methods can easily be put into practice using the CATMOD and GENMOD procedures of SAS/STAT.
