오정희의 ｢옛우물｣에 구현된 연민의 감정

국문 초록

이 연구는 오정희의 ｢옛우물｣을 대상으로 하여 작품 속에 나타난 연민의 감정이 어떤 방식으로 형상화되면서 그 내적 의미를 완성시키는지를 고찰하려는 목적을 지닌다. 오정희 소설에서 연민이 중요한 이유는 이 감정이 수치심, 혐오 긴밀한 상관관계를 이루며 작품을 추동하는 요소로 작용하고 있기 때문이다. 이를 살피기 위해 본고에서는 연민을 실천 철학의 핵심으로 삼는 누스바움의 감정 철학을 방법론으로 삼아 작품을 분석하였다. ｢옛우물｣에 나타난 연민의 감정은 수치심과 자기 혐오로부터 출발한다. 주인공은 어린 시절부터 무의식적으로 인간의 불완전성과 유한성을 드러내는 것들에서 수치심을 느끼고, 죽음을 연상시키는 오염된 것들에 대해 혐오를 드러낸다. 불륜을 저지르는 주인공의 모습에서 자기 혐오는 더욱 강화되며 이는 ‘귀울음’이라는 질병으로 표출된다. 수치심과 자기 혐오의 감정은 내면적 처벌을 거쳐 주인공이 상실의 고통을 응시하고 자기 연민에 이르게 만든다. ‘분별 있는 관찰자’의 시선을 간직한 주인공은 자기 처벌의 장소(유폐의 공간)에서 연당집과 바보의 행위를 응시하는데, 이 응시를 통해 주인공은 연당집의 상실을 바라보며 느끼는 바보의 고통과, ‘그의 죽음’을 대하는 자신의 고통이 동일하다는 것을 확인한다. 바보가 느끼는 고통의 심각성에 대한 판단과, 그 고통이 부당함으로 인해 발생한 것이 아니라는 인식을 통해 ‘그의 죽음’을 인정하고 자기에게도 연민의 시선을 드리운다. 자기 연민은 빛의 상상력 복원을 통해 연민의 확장으로 이어진다. 주인공은 수치심과 혐오, 상실의 고통과 자기 연민의 감정을 흰빛으로 응축시켜 확산하고 잊혔던 금빛을 소환하여, 존재의 불완전성과 유한성을 극복하면서 연민을 확장한다. 이처럼 연민의 감정은 오정희 소설의 심층에 흐르는 핵심으로서, 인간 존재에 대한 근원적 수치심과 혐오를 극복하고 존재에 대해 긍정적 시선을 담아 내는 중요한 기제로 작용하고 있다. 이는 오정희가 그의 소설을 통해 궁극적으로 지향하고자 했던 작가의식이라고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to consider how a feeling of compassion shown in Oh, Jeong-Hee’s has been represented to complete the internal meanings. The reason why the compassion is important in Oh, Jeong-Hee’s novels is that this feeling is working as an element that drives the work in such close correlations with shame and hatred. In order to examine this, this thesis analyzed the work based on the methodology of Nussbaum’s Philosophy of Feelings that would regard compassion as the core of its practical philosophy. The first process of operating the feeling of compassion shown in is shame and self-hatred. The main character who unconsciously feels a shame of imperfection and finitude of human since childhood, reveals hatred against something contaminated reminding of death. In the look of the main character who commits adultery, the shame and self-hatred are more strengthened, which is expressed in a disease called ‘tinnitus’. The feelings of shame and self-hatred make the main character gaze the pain of loss and then reach self-compassion after going through the internal punishment. The main character with the gaze of ‘a sensible observer’ gazes the house of Yeondang and an idiot in the place for self-punishment(a space for confinement). Through this gaze, the main character realizes that the disappearance of the house of Yeondang and the idiot’s pain are her own pain feeling about ‘his death’. After feeling the seriousness of the idiot’s pain, cognizing that his injustice is not the reason for what has happened, finally acknowledging ‘his death’, and completing self-punishment, she gives a gaze of compassion to herself. Self-compassion is led to the expansion of compassion through the imagination recovery of light. Just as the main character acquires the eternity through the circulation of well, star, tree, and flower finally after restoring the imagination of glittering light of old well and golden fish, the human beings complete the expansion of compassion longing for the acquisition of eternity(eudemonistic judgment) by repeating the extinction and formation.
