조경란 치매 서사에 나타난 이야기 정체성

국문 초록

본고는 리쾨르의 이야기 정체성이라는 윤리적 논의를 바탕으로 조경란의 치매 서사 네 작품을 분석하였다. 이 작품들을 우선 ‘돌봄’을 기준으로 돌보는 이가 서사의 중심인 작품과 돌봄의 대상인 치매 환자가 서사의 중심인 작품으로 대별하고, 각 작품 모두 이야기 정체성 형성이 공통적인 주제 의식으로 작용하고 있음을 주장하였다. ｢내 사랑 클레멘타인｣, ｢밤이 깊었네｣는 치매 환자를 돌보는 여성 서술자(돌봄이)가 서사의 중심인 작품들이다. 이 작품들은 특히 조경란 소설의 지속적인 화두였던 ‘가족 이데올로기’의 구조 속에서 ‘돌봄’의 의미가 고찰되는 특징을 보인다. 따라서 치매 환자나 증상보다 치매 환자를 돌보는 서술자의 이야기가 중심이 된다. 이러한 맥락에서 이 작품들은 가족 이데올로기의 직접적인 피영향자로서 자신의 존재 가치를 상실한 돌봄이 서술자가 이야기 정체성 형성을 통해 자아를 회복하는 과정을 보여주는 서사로 해석될 수 있었다. ｢달걀｣, ｢달팽이에게｣는 이야기 정체성 형성 과정의 중심이 치매 환자(돌봄 대상)인 작품들이다. 이 두 작품의 서술자는 남성 조카들로서 가족 이데올로기의 구조와는 상대적으로 관련성이 적으며 돌봄 대상에 서사의 중심이 놓여 있다. 따라서 ‘돌봄’이 지닌 갈등적 의미가 달리 나타나기도 하여 특히 ｢달팽이에게｣에서는 매우 긍정적인 의미로 나타난다. 그 이유는 둘이면서 한 인물 같은 자매의 특성, 즉 돌봄이가 돌봄 대상의 이야기 정체성을 완벽하게 형성하고 있다는 데서 찾을 수 있다. 특히 두 작품 모두 치매 환자의 ‘존엄한 죽음’을 중시하는데, 한 인간의 이야기의 완성점이 죽음이라는 점에서 작품에 일관된 이야기 정체성의 의미를 확인할 수 있다. 결론적으로, 조경란의 치매 서사는 치매가 야기하는 갈등 구조에서 인간의 존엄성을 회복하는 핵심으로서 이야기 정체성을 제시하고 있는 것으로 이해할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Based on the ethical discussion of the narrative identity of P. Ricoeur, this paper analyzed the four dementia narratives of Cho Kyung-ran. First of all, we classified them into two parts, those of which the caregivers are at the center of the narrative and those of which dementia patients are at the center of the narrative, and it was argued that the formation of narrative identity is a common thematic concept. My Love Clementine and It s Deep in the Night are works in which a female narrator(caregiver) who takes care of a dementia patient is the center of the narrative. In particular, the works show the meaning of ‘caring’ being considered in the structure of ‘family ideology’, which has been the constant topic of the novels by Cho Kyung-ran. Therefore, the story of a narrator who takes care of a dementia patient rather than a dementia patient or his/her symptom gets the main focus. In this context, these works could be interpreted as the narratives showing how the caregivers, who have lost their value as victims of family ideology, recover themselves through the formation of a narrative identity. Eggs and To Snails are works in which dementia patients(care subjects) are at the center of the formation of narrative identity. The narrators of these two works are nephews, who are relatively less related to the structure of family ideology, so the focus of narrative is on the care subjects. Therefore, the meaning of caring is different from that of other works, especially in To Snails, it appears as very positive meaning. We think the reason for this is that the two persons who are one-person-like sisters, specifially, the caregiver forms the narrative identity of the care subject perfectly. In particular, the thematic concept of narrative identity can be confirmed by the fact that both works show the ‘grave death’ of dementia patients, because death is the perfect point of a human s story. In conclusion, it can be understood that Cho Kyung-ran s dementia narrative presents a narrative identity as the key to restoring human dignity in the conflict structure caused by dementia.
