국문 초록

본 연구는 Bao와 Boyle(2009)가 제시한 교차로 상황 중 좌/우 회전 구간에서 고령 운전자의 공간 정보 처리 능력에 따른 운전 수행의 차이를 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 위해서 민윤기 등(2006)이 사용한 공간 작업 기억 과제를 통해 고령 운전자들의 공간 정보 처리 능력을 측정하였으며, 수준별로 두 집단을 구성하였다. 한편 젊은 성인 운전자들을 대비집단으로 구성하여 회전 형태와 집단에 따른 운전 수행(교차로 통과시간 및 진입속도, 교차로 통과시 속도 및 핸들링 변화량)의 차이를 살펴보았다. 그 결과, 공간 정보 처리 능력이 저조한 고령 운전자 집단이 대비 집단에 비해 교차로 통과시간이 느린 것으로 나타난 반면, 공간 정보 처리 능력이 우수한 고령 운전자 집단은 대비 집단과의 차이가 유의하지 않은 것으로 나타났다. 이는 공간 정보 처리 능력이 저조한 고령 운전자가 교차로에 존재하는 공간 정보들을 빠르게 처리하지 못해 교차로를 통과하는데 보다 오랜 시간이 요구됨을 시사하는 것이다. 또한 공간 정보 처리 능력이 우수한 고령 운전자 집단이 대비 집단에 비해 핸들링의 변화량이 보다 큰 것으로 나타난 반면, 공간 정보 처리 능력이 저조한 운전자 집단은 대비 집단과의 차이가 유의하지 않은 것으로 나타났다. 이는 고령 운전자들의 신체적 능력은 전반적으로 저조한 반면, 인지적 처리 수준은 개인차가 존재하므로 인지적 처리 수준과 신체적 능력 수준간의 균형여부(우수-저조 or 저조-저조)에 따라 서로 다른 수행의 결과가 나타날 수 있음을 시사하는 것이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to examine the differences of older drivers’ driving performances according to spatial information processing skills at left- and right-turn among intersection situations suggested by Bao and Boyle(2009). Spatial information processing skills of older drivers were measured in the spatial working memory task used by Min et al.(2006), and they were divided into two groups(good/poor) depending on the level of spatial information processing skills. Young drivers, as well as, were composed contrast group, and we examined the differences of driving performances(intersection passing times, approach velocities, speed variation and handling variations) due to three groups. As a result, the poor older group in the spatial information processing skills to contrast group passed more slowly through the intersection, but the difference of passing times between good older and contrast group was not significant. It is suggested that the poor older drivers in the spatial information processing skills would used more times when they pass through the intersection, because they didn’t process spatial information quickly. In addition, the handling variations of good older group were more than that of contrast group, and there was no significant difference in handling variations between poor older and contrast group. It is suggested that there may be different results of performances depending on whether the balance between the level of cognitive processing and physical skill or not.
