상속이 기혼남성의 노동공급에 미친 영향

국문 초록

근로자의 노동공급에 관련한 많은 연구에서 소득효과가 뚜렷하게 나타나지 않는 경향이 있다. 이는 비근로소득을 측정하는 과정에서 나타난 오차, 혹은 근로자의 일에 대한 선호로 인한 편의가 반영된 결과일 수 있다. 그러므로 노동공급의 소득효과를 검증하기 위해서는 근로자의 선호와 무관하고 측정오차가 적은 변수를 찾는 것이 중요하다. 본 연구는 국내 연구에서는 처음으로 근로자의 상속 경험을 이용하여 소득효과를 추정하였다. 상속의 경우 상속받는 입장에서 비근로소득으로 인식되며, 일시적으로 큰 규모의 자산이 이전되어 측정오차가 적은 편이고 근로자의 근로에 대한 선호와도 무관하게 발생하기 때문에 소득효과를 추정하는데 적합한 변수이다. 재정패널 4~11차년도 자료를 이용하여 고정효과 패널 모형으로 상속에 따라 우리나라 기혼 남성의 연간 근로시간이 어떤 영향을 받는지 분석한 결과, 상속과 기혼 남성의 연간 근로시간 사이에 유의한 음의 관계를 발견하였다. 구체적으로, 상속금액이 100만원 증가할 때 연간 근로시간이 약 0.80시간 정도 줄어든다고 추정되었다. 상속의 효과는 상속 금액이 클 때만 유의하게 나타나며, 상속 당해연도 효과가 더 큰 것으로 추정되나 시점에 따라 유의하게 변하지 않는다는 결과도 확인되었다. 직종 및 가구 소득을 추가적으로 통제한 경우에도 상속의 효과는 여전히 유의하게 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 우리나라 기혼 남성근로자의 노동공급 의사결정과정에서 소득효과가 작용하고 있음을 의미한다.

영문 초록

Many previous studies found no income effect on labor supply. This might be due to the bias from the measurement errors in non-labor income or the bias form a worker’s preference for labor associated with non-labor income. It is important to find a variable which is free from measurement error and exogenous of worker’s preference in order to identify the income effect on the labor supply. Our study firstly use the experience of inheritance to identify the income effect on the male’s working decisions in Korea. We use the National Survey of Tax and Benefit Panel data for estimation, and the fixed effect model estimation results show a significantly negative association between the inherited amount and the annual working hours. Specifically, the annual working hours are estimated to decrease by approximately 0.80 hours when the inherited amount increases by 1 million Korean Won. Estimation results also show that the effect of inherited amount is significant when the inherited amount is great and persist. The effect of inheritance remains consistent even after controlling for a worker’s occupational status and other household income, which hints at the fact that the income effect plays a considerable role when Korean males make decisions on labor supply.
