어학성적 우수자와 수학성적 우수자의 작업기억과제 수행에 따른 뇌영역 활성화 차이

국문 초록

본 연구에서는 어학과목 성적이 수학과목 성적에 비해 더 높거나 이와 반대로 수학과목 성적이 어학과목 성적에 비해 더 높은 고등학생들이 공간 혹은 시각 작업기억 과제를 수행할 때 차별적으로 활성화되는 뇌 영역과 그 강도를 fMRI 영상을 이용하여 비교하였다. 분석 결과, (1) 기존의 연구결과와 마찬가지로 특정 과목의 상대적 우수성과는 상관없이 공간 작업기억 과제 수행에서는 측면해마 영역이 상대적으로 더 많은 활성화를 보인 반면, 언어 작업기억 과제수행에서는 브로드만 8영역이 상대적으로 더 많이 활성화되었다. (2) 공간 작업기억 과제에 대해서는 수학성적 우수집단에서, 반면 언어 작업기억 과제에 대해서는 어학성적 우수집단에서 상대적으로 더 많은 뇌 활성화가 관찰되었다. 특히 (3) 기존의 일반적인 연구 결과와는 달리 어학성적 우수집단의 경우 공간 작업기억 과제를 수행할 때는 좌반구가, 반면 언어 작업기억 과제를 수행할 때는 우반구가 더 많이 활성화되는 경향이 관찰되었다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to compare brain activation patterns measured by fMRI when high school students with relative superiority in language or mathematics perform spacial or verbal working memory tasks. The subjects were selected based on school grades of Korean and English or Mathematics. The results can be summarized as followings: First, spacial working memory task induced greater brain activation in the parahippocampus, whereas verbal working memory task induced greater brain activation in the superior frontal gyrus. Second, verbal working memory task induced greater brain activation for high language grade group, whereas spatial working memory task for high mathematics grade group. Third, in case of high language grade group, the right-hemisphere activated more when they perform verbal working memory task, whereas the left-hemisphere activated more when they perform spatial working memory task. These results implicated that the brain activation meausred during working memory tasks can be varied according to academic achievement patterns.
