국문 초록

이 논문에서는 청년패널 1~11차 자료를 이용하여 가족배경과 경제활동이 혼인시기의 결정에 미친 영향에 대해 살펴보았다. 기존 연구와 달리 본 연구에서는 청년의 경제활동과 관련된 요인에 가족 배경 등 결혼 결정에 영향을 미칠 수 있는 다른 요인들을 추가하여 종합적으로 분석을 시도했다. 또한 기존 연구에서 사용한 자료보다 더 오랜 기간인 11년에 걸친 종단자료를 이용하여 분석했다. 분석 표본은 4,405명의 자료로 구성되었고, 분석에는 총 22,735개의 관측치가 사용되었다. 생존분석 모형을 이용한 연구결과는 경제적 지위의 중요성을 일관되게 보여준다. 높은 급여수준, 교육수준과 직업 안정성은 결혼을 촉진한 반면, 불안정한 종사상 지위와 실업은 결혼을 지연시켰다. 또한 이미 알려진 연령과 교육수준의 효과 이외에도 기존 연구에서 주목하지 않았던 새로운 요인들의 영향을 찾을 수 있었다. 형제자매의 수가 많을수록 결혼을 빨리했고, 모친의 교육 연수가 높을수록 결혼을 늦게 했다. 부친의 교육수준이 자녀의 결혼시점에 대해 미친 영향은 뚜렷하지 않았다. 본 연구에서 새롭게 발견한 이러한 효과들에 대해서는 앞으로 다양한 이론 및 실증 분석을 통해 심도 있게 구명해나가는 후속 연구가 필요하다.

영문 초록

The effect of family background and economic activity on marriage decisions was analyzed using the 11 waves of the Korean youth panel data. Different from existing studies, a comprehensive model that has more variables was employed to capture the influence of the young people’s economic activities, socioeconomic backgrounds, and family characteristics on marriage decision, using a rich data set spanning eleven years. The sample consists of 22,735 observations from 4,405 individuals. The result from survival analysis consistently shows that economic status plays an important role in marriage decisions. Higher salary levels, greater years of schooling, and job stability accelerated marriage, while unstable job status and unemployment delayed marriage. Besides reconfirming the well-know effects of age and educational attainment levels on the age of marriage, some channels that were not noticed by previous literature were also reported as follows. The number of siblings shows a positive effect, while mother’s educational attainment level reveals a negative effect on the timing of marriage. These findings demand further theoretical and empirical follow-up research to understand the marriage behavior of the Korean young people and to design better population policies.
