국문 초록

본 논문은 일본에서 자살률이 가장 낮은 가이후정의 공동체 특성을 조사한 내용을 검토함으로써, 지역 공동체 활동과 연계된 자살예방 대책의 방향성을 모색하기 위한 것이다. 오카(M. Oka 2013)는 자살이 적게 일어나는 지역에는 자살억제요인이 있을 것이라는 가설을 세우고, 가이후정에 대한 조사를 통하여 그 지역의 공동체의 특성을 발견하였다. 적절한 사회통합의 정도는 공동체의 다양성과 지역 주민들의 주도적인 활동에 긍정적으로 작용한다. 소속감의 약화와 남에 대한 부담감은 자살 생각을 일으키는 대인관계 요인으로서, 자살예방의 활동을 통한 개입이 충분하게 이뤄질 경우 자살 생각을 낮출 수 있다. 지역 공동체는 삶의 구체적인 현장에 있는 사람들의 모임이기 때문에, 공동체의 사회적 자본과 주민들의 참여를 통한 공동체의 재구축이 논의되어야만 한다. 이런 점에서 주민들의 상호협력과 연대, 그리고 공동체의 근본적 원리를 성찰하고자 하는 마을 만들기는 우리의 자살대책을 위한 활동에 유용한 하나의 방향성을 제시해 줄 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to explore the direction of suicide prevention strategies in connection with local community activities by examining the community characteristics of Kaifu-Cho—the region with the lowest suicide rate in Japan. M. Oka(2013) hypothesized that there would be suicide prevention factors in a low suicide rate region and discovered some characteristics of the community while surveying Kaifu-Cho. An appropriate level of social integration has positive effects on the diversity of communities and the initiatives of local residents. Failed belongingness and perceived burdensomeness are the interpersonal factors that instigate thoughts of suicide, thoughts that can be reduced by adequately intervening through suicide prevention activities. Since the community is a group of people living in a particular place, the rebuilding of a community should be discussed through the participation of the residents and the social capital. In this regard, a community building based on mutual cooperation, solidarity, and the fundamental principles of the community can provide useful directions for suicide countermeasures.
