박완서 동화의 동심 형상화와 원형적 체험

국문 초록

이 글은 그동안 소설과 비교하여, 상대적으로 연구되지 않았던 박완서 동화를 분석하는 데 목적이 있다. 특히, 박완서 동화를 작가론적 관점에서 살펴보고자한다. 동화에서 형상화되는 동심은 ‘독자에게 전달하기 위해서 작가가 상상력을 발휘하여 구성한 유년의 마음’이다. 필연적으로 작가는 동심 형상화를 위하여 자신의 체험과 기억들을 떠올리고, 이상적인 가치를 작품에 투영시킨다. 박완서는 자신의 동화를 통해서 손자들에게 힘을 주고, 지친 어른들에게 위안과 용기를 주고자 하였다. 본고에서는 박완서의 동화에서 동심이 형상화되는 지점을 작가의 원형적 체험과의 비교를 통해 정리해보고자 한다. 이처럼 작가의 체험과 작품 세계를 연결하는 작업은 박완서의 작품을 보다 풍성하게 이해하는 일련의 과정이 될 것이다. 박완서 동화에서는 주로 ‘건강한 시골 공간, 지혜로운 노년 인물, 종교적 소재’가 동심 형상화의 주요 구성 요소가 된다. 먼저, 박완서 동화에서는 건강한 시골이 중요한 공간으로 설정되고 있다. 이는 작가가 유년시절을 보낸 고향에 대한 긍정적인 기억이 소환된 결과이다. 특히, 도시생활에서 체험한 일련의 박탈감들은 시골 공간의 가치를 높여주는데 영향을 미친다. 다음으로, 박완서 동화에는 지혜로운 노인이 주요 인물로 등장한다. 작가가 노년기에 들어서면서 느꼈던 소외 의식과, 이를 극복하면서 느낀 노년의 가치가 작품 속 동심 형상화의 맥락과 닿아있다. 또한, 조부모님과 시부모님의 지혜와 관련된 작가의 체험은 노년을 긍정적으로 판단할 수 있는 근거를 마련해 주었다. 마지막으로, 박완서 동화에서는 종교적 소재가 작품 속에서 치유의 역할을 수행한다. 소설에서 신앙적 모티브가 직접적으로 드러나지 않았던 것과 달리, 동화 속에서는 종교적 소재를 전면에 내세운 작품들이 눈에 띤다. 가족의 상실을 신앙을 통하여 치유 받았던 작가의 체험이 새로운 글쓰기의 바탕이 된 것으로 판단할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper seeks to analyze the children’s stories of Park Wan-Seo which have been relatively neglected in research compared to her novels. In particular, her children’s stories will be reviewed from the perspective of the theory of authorship. The childhood sensibilities projected in children’s stories can be defined as the ‘emotions of the youth composed by the author’s imagination in order to be conveyed to the reader’. Naturally, the author thinks of her own experience and memories to project such sentiments and reflect ideal values onto her work. Park Wan-Seo sought to empower her grandchildren through her children’s stories and offer comfort and courage to exhausted adults. This paper seeks to compile the point at which childhood sentiments are projected by comparing it with the prototypical experience of the author. Such an effort to link the author’s experience with the universe portrayed in her work will be a series of processes that help understand the rich context of the works by Park Wan-Seo. In the children’s stories by Park Wan-Seo, major elements are ‘rural areas that represent a healthy environment, a wise older figure and religious themes’. First, a healthy rural area serves as an important setting in the children’s stories of Park. This is the result of the author’s own positive memories of her childhood in the countryside. In particular, the sense of isolation experienced in urban life serves to boost the value of the countryside. Next, in Park’s children’s stories there is usually a wise older figure. This is in line with the isolation the author felt as she grew older and the value of older age that she came to appreciate being projected onto the childhood sentiments in her children’s stories. Moreover, her experience associated with the wisdom of her great grandparents and parents-in-law served as the basis to positively re-evaluate older age. Lastly, religious themes play the role of healing in children’s stories by Park. Unlike in her novels where religious motifs were brought to the fore, in children’s stories there are quite a few where the theme is portrayed more explicitly. This can be interpreted as her personal experience of having been healed and her overcoming the loss of her family through religion, which served as an inspiration for new writing.
