국문 초록

본 논문에서는 탈식민주의에 대해서 논하고, 토니 모리슨(Toni Morrison)의 소설 『타르 베이비』(Tar Baby)에 나타난 탈식민주의적 관점을 분석하고 탈식민주의 글쓰기에 대해서 논하고자 한다. 탈식민주의는 1980년대부터 논의되어왔으나 아직 “Postcolonialism”이라는 단어에 대한 개념정리도 확실히 정립되지 않은 상황이다. 탈식민은 서구담론에 의해 생긴 이데올로기와 권력에 의해 연구되고 있으므로 비서구 국가에서도 탈식민에 대한 연구가 더욱 필요한 상황이다. 사회적인 현상뿐만 아니라, 사람들이 쉽게 접할 수 있는 문학작품을 탈식민주의적 시각으로 분석하고 연구하는 것도 중요하기 때문에 본 논문에서는 영문학 작품을 통해 이를 논의하고자 한다. 토니 모리슨은 『타르 베이비』는 과거에 영국의 식민지였음에도 불구하고 독립 후 아프리카인들을 식민노예로 삼은 미국의 상황을 적나라하게 보여주는 작품이다. 이 작품에서 모리슨은 식민 현장인 카리브를 작품의 배경으로 삼았고, 서구제국주의의 식민 자본주의적 폭력을 고발하고 흑인신화를 인간을 통해 복원하려 하고 있다. 주인공 son과 Jadine, 섬을 식민화시킨 Valerian의 행동을 통해 서구 사회의 제국주의와 식민주의, 미국 자본주의를 앞세운 신식민주의의 폭력을 노예의 억압받고 훼손된 삶을 살펴볼 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 모리슨의 작품을 탈식민주의적 관점으로 분석하고, 그녀가 저항적 글쓰기를 통해 미국의 흑인이 겪는 현실적인 상황과 작중 인물들이 식민주의를 거부하는 과정을 어떻게 표현하는지 살펴보고자 한다.

영문 초록

This paper is aimed at discussing Postcolonialism, analyzing the postcolonial perspective shown in Toni Morrison s novel 『Tar Baby』, and discussing postcolonial writing. Postcolonialism has been discussed since the 1980s, but actually, even the concept arrangement of the word Postcolonialism has not been established as yet. Postcolonialism is being discussed through the ideology and power which arose from the Western discourse, so it s more required that even the non-Western countries should do research on Postcolonialism. Not to mention a social phenomenon, it s also important to do analysis of and research on literary works, with which people easily come in contact through postcolonial perspective; thus, this paper is intending to discuss it through English literature works. Toni Morrison s 『Tar Baby』 is the novel which plainly shows the situation in America which made Africans slaves after their independence although America was also British colony in the past. In this novel, Morrison used the colonial site-the Caribbean as the background of the work, denounced the colonial capitalism violence of the western imperialism and tried to restore the colored people s myth through humans. It s possible to look into the Western society s imperialism and colonialism, and neocolonial violence under the pretext of American capitalism, as well as slaves suppressed, damaged life through the main characters-Son and Jadine, and the act of Valerian who colonized the island. This paper is intending to analyze Morrison s novel from the postcolonial perspective, and to look into how the author expresses realistic circumstances suffered by colored people in America, and the process, in which the characters in the story reject colonialism through her resistant writing.
