문화융합을 위한 지방학의 가능성-포항의 경우

국문 초록

이 연구는 문화융합을 위한 다양한 준거 가운데 지역적 특성의 융합이 어떤 방식으로 가능할 것인지에 대해 검토한 것이다. 문화가 생산된 지역적 배경은 그 문화를 이해하는 데 중요한 요소가 될 수 있으며, 동일한 소재에 대한 지역적 변화 역시 문화 연구에 불가결한 요소가 될 수 있다. 한국문화는 비교적 좁은 국토에서 민족적으로 큰 차이 없이 생산되었지만, 지역을 나누는 산과 강으로 인해 비교적 특수성이 살아 있는 상태로 향유되고 있다. 지난 역사에서는 지방의 면적과 인구분포가 균등하게 이루어져 있었고, 각 지방마다 우수한 지식인들이 자리잡고 있어서 지방 문화가 전국 문화에서 중요한 역할을 할 수 있었다. 그러나 산업화시대로 접어들면서 인구의 편중이 심해지고, 현대에 들어와서는 정치적 경제적 이익을 따라 인구가 수도권으로 집중되면서 문화의 편중도 심해지고 있다. 이렇게 편중된 문화는 한국문화 전체를 빈곤하게 할 가능성이 있다. 다양성과 생동성을 기반으로 하는 문화현상은, 국토의 균형 발전과 원활한 소통에 의해서 얻어질 수 있는 것이다. 그런 점에서 지방학은 한국문화를 풍성하게 하는 유용한 통로가 될 수 있다. 더욱이 이미 전 세계에 흩어져 살고 있는 한민족 전체를 아우르는 문화로 융합되기 위해서는 전래의 지방학과 함께 세계적 한국학이 연구되어야 할 필요가 있다. 지방학의 한 사례로서의 포항연구는 아직 시작단계에 있다. 포항의 정체성을 기반으로 하여, 외래 지식인과 이주 산업인력의 교감을 연구하고 이로 인한 사회변동과 발전 가능성을 탐구하는 것은, 포항이라는 한 지방의 사례를 넘어 한국사회 전체를 조망하는 창구가 될 수 있다. 포항은 전통적인 농어업 사회에서 철강 산업을 중심으로 하는 공업 사회로 이행해가는 과정에서 급속한 인구팽창을 경험한 바 있다. 그러나 지금 철강 산업이 퇴조하면서 향후 포항사회의 재편성이 요청되는 상황을 맞았다. 이러한 포항을 세밀히 들여다보는 것이 한국사회를 전체적으로 이해하고 전망하는 데 도움이 될 것이기 때문이다. 한국문화를 서울 중심으로 일원화하고 한두 가지 성격으로 특화하는 것은 한국문화를 잘 이해하는 방법이 아니다. 각 지방이 각 특성에 따른 문화적 발전을 이루고 그것을 기술하고 특화하여 다양한 문화현상을 가지게 되는 것이 한국문화를 진정으로 발전시키는 길이 될 것이다.

영문 초록

This study examines how convergence of local characteristics, among various criteria of culture convergence, is possible. Regional background of a culture is an important factor in understanding that culture, and regional change of the same matter is also an essential factor in culture studies. Although Korean culture was created without much diversity in relatively small territory, because of mountains and rivers that divide regions, Korean culture passed down with comparative regional specificity. In the past, area and population of all the regions were even and each region evenly had excellent intellects, so local culture of provinces played important role in national culture. However, as industrialization began, concentration of population intensified, and today, concentration of culture is also intensifying as population crowded around the capital city, following political and economic profits. Such intensely concentrated culture might impoverish the whole Korean culture. Cultural phenomena that bases on diversity and vitality can only be gained through balanced development of territory and harmonious communication. In that aspect, local studies can be a valuable method to make Korean culture more abundant. Moreover, to converge Korean culture to embrace all the Korean people who are already spread out in the world, international Korean studies should be done along with traditional local studies. Study of Pohang, as a case of local studies, is still in beginning stage. Based on Pohang s identity, studying development potential and social changes caused by communion with foreign intellects and immigrant industrial manpower can further be a window to view the whole Korean society, beyond mere province. Pohang experienced drastic population increase in the process of society change from traditional farming and fishing society to industrial society centered by steel industry. However, as steel industry is declining nowadays, Pohang is facing demand to reorganize its society. Carefully looking into this situation Pohang is at will help understand and prospect the whole Korean society thoroughly. Unifying or classifying Korean culture into one or two characteristics with Seoul being the core is not a great way to understand Korean culture well. A true way to develop Korean culture is to maintain various cultural phenomena by developing, recording and specializing each region s local cultural characteristics.
