해방기 염상섭과 『경향신문』

국문 초록

해방기 염상섭의 삶은 크게 세 시기로 나누어서 이해할 수 있다. 첫 번째는 만주(滿洲)에서 해방을 맞이한 뒤, 국경을 넘고 삼팔선을 넘어 다시 서울로 돌아오는 시기이다. 두 번째는 그가 경향신문 초대 편집국장으로 부임하여 주필인 정지용 과 함께 신문기자로 활동하다가 함께 물러나는 시기이다. 이 무렵은 한반도의 정부수립을 놓고 회의를 진행중이던 미소공동위원회가 중단되고, 국제연합(UN)으로 정부수립 문제가 이관되는 기간과 거의 겹쳐진다. 세 번째는 염상섭이 􋺷신민일보􋺸 주필이자 편집국장으로 활동하며 단독정부수립에 반대하고 자주통일을 위해 노력하던 시기이다. 본 논문은 세 시기 가운데 두 번째 시기를 대상으로 삼아 경향신문에서의 염상섭 활동을 고찰하는 가운데, 그의 정치적 지향과 사상적 횡보(橫步) 를 살펴보았다. 이 무렵 염상섭의 삶과 정치적 지향을 이해하는 데에는 김동리의 회고가 중요한 자료로 활용되어 왔다. 본 논문에서는 정치성과 사상성이 표백화된 순수문학자 혹은 보수문학자로 형상화하고 있는 김동리의 회고를 비판적으로 독 해하면서, 분단과 냉전의 체제를 넘어서고자했던 염상섭의 정치적․사상적 지향을 살펴보았다. 특히 경향신문사 주요 편집진 및 임원진의 변동을 검토하면서 염상섭과 정지용의 퇴사가 정치적․사상적 맥락과 깊이 연관되어 있음을 논의하였 다. 이 시기 염상섭은 국제적인 상황과 조건을 고려하는 가운데, 좌우연합을 통하여 자주통일국가를 건설하고자 하는 지향을 보여주었으며, 그것을 민족통합과 일상생활의 안정화에 기반하여 형성되는 주체성을 통해 현실화하고자 했다.

영문 초록

Understanding on a life of Yom Sang-seop after the liberation may be done in terms of three periods. The first is the period when Yom Sang-seop welcomed the liberation in Manchuria and then came back to Seoul, crossing the border and the 38th parallel. The second is the period when he was appointed as the first executive editor at the Kyunghyang Shinmun and then worked as a journalist and resigned from a post together with Chong Chi-Yong, a chief editor. It was almost overlapped with the period when The Joint Soviet-American Commission was disbanded, which had held a conference on establishment of a government in the Korean Peninsula, and such an issue was transferred to the United Nations(UN). The third is the period when Yom Sang-seop worked as a chief and executive editor at the SHINMINILBO and made an effort for the independent unification while opposing a separate government. Focused on the second of three periods, this paper examined activities of Yom Sang-seop at the Kyunghyang Shinmun and investigated his political orientation and ideological walking sideways(橫步). To understand his life and political orientation at that time, memoirs by Kim Tong-ni have been used as the important material. The paper conducted critical reading on the memoirs by Kim Tong-ni where he was depicted as a pure or conservative literary man whose politicality and ideology were bleached and examined political․ideological orientation of Yom Sang-seop who made an attempt at going beyond the division and the cold war system. In particular, the paper reviewed changes of editorial staff and executives of the Kyunghyang Shinmun and argued that
